Karen Stintz took her pro light-rail message to the people of Scarborough Thursday night and felt the wrath of residents who refuse to accept anything less than a subway.

A couple hundred people packed into the council chambers at the Scarborough Civic Centre for a meeting and debate organized by the Toronto Taxpayers Coalition. Ms. Stintz had started her evening promoting LRTs at another, much smaller, transit meeting in Malvern organized by Councillor Raymond Cho.

The civic centre crowd was dramatically more hostile to her pitch, booing and heckling the freshly reaffirmed chair of the Toronto Transit Commission and calling on her to resign.

“You’re stealing money from the residents of Scarborough, you’re stealing from me,” hollered Tom Varesh, 38, who has spent most of his life in Scarborough. He calculated that since Scarborough represents one-quarter of Toronto’s population, it should get $2.1-billion of the $8.4-billion the province has earmarked for the city’s public transit network.

Light rail has never fulfilled its "promises", wherever it has been built. Unfortunately, the kind of transit systems that were widely available in the early 20th century, simply are far too expensive to build today, and people simply will NOT ride them unless forced to do so.

Back in the early 20th century, the "downtown" portion of every town was where almost all business occurred. It was concentrated in a relatively compact area, even in the largest cities. There were multiple streetcar (or subway/overhead train) routes that covered all of the downtown area, and linked it to most of the residential districts.

Now, in most cities, business are spread out all over the place, the transit systems don't go that close to most businesses, and they also do not go widely into residential neighborhoods. So, you have to take your car to a station, get on a train, go into town, then take a bus or taxi to get to where you are going , and reverse the process to get home. If you want to shop, it is almost useless.

But, the "powers that be" simply can not figure out why people don't and won't, use their systems.

I live in a smaller city (I think it's population is about 230,000), &
I haven't used public transport (for us, the bus) in several years.

It just doesn't work well, & I can (if need be) usually get to where
I want to be on foot as fast or faster than public transit can get me
with waiting & transfers, etc....

Our public transport system usually doesn't run on holidays and
comes around once an hour on Sundays....and shuts down before
(I believe) midnight weekdays. With the pace of life in today's world,
I can see where this wouldn't work for most people.

Years back, between cars, I discovered that I could walk home from
work (56 city blocks in about 50 minutes) much faster than waiting
for the bus & transfering to get me close enough to finish walking
home. That was the reality of the system at that point in time, &
I don't think it has gotten much better.

Going into Scarborough and meeting with the Malvern residences and she wasn’t even packing just proves yet again she has Mayor qualities.

I support the Mayor on this one. The LRT Transit City plan will take away traffic lanes in an ever growing city that has more people per square mile because of high density housing which means a lot of condos. This means traffic chaos because of the reduced car lanes. With a subway system there is two levels of traffic that does not impede each other.

With the LRT raised tracks the emergency vehicles would take longer for emergencies because they have to slow down to cross the raised tracks.

TTC Chair Karen Stintz just made the wrong decision on this one.

She even filled-in during the late meloveulongtime shift at the Eglinton/McCowan 'Happy Endings' spa. Bit of a trooper she was. Not squeamish in the least.

Before we decide to make armchair arguments, let's look at the facts:

Clearly Ford's proposal makes sense..

IF YOU'RE INSANE.

She's dancin' at Caddy's tonight. U jelly?

I have a mental fence from you downtown douchebags anyway.

ohh caddy's, I haven't been there in a few years.

I agree there should be a subway to Scarborough, but Mayor Ford does not have a way to fund it. My suggestion would be to set up a toll system coming into 416 based on residence. Can't fund this on a no-tax policy. Make the 905'ers pay.

Maybe a whole crap load of them bike paths then. Have ya seen the wee little traffic lights especially for 'em? They're the bee's knees man.

If you're in the hood one day we should go. I know the owner (and his daughters). Bought his renovation materials at our store. Yugoslavian mafia connections or some such tall tale.

Hey, I cycle, arsehole! I'm not of the holy, my way or the highway (no pun intended) though.

Definitely, we should do a beer.

And I have cycled (once upon a coons' age). Doesn't change the fact that the 2-wheeled doucemobiles have their own special tax-payer funded Lego Land 'traffic' lights.

As long as you don't bomb around on one of those Pee Wee Herman rigs, we can definately beer.
