It is expected that The Right Honourable Stephen Harper P.C., M.P. (Calgary Southwest), the Prime Minister, is to name a successor to the Office of the Governor General as early as next week. Such an announcement would coincide with the homecoming of Her Majesty the Queen of Canada during our Canada Day celebrations. In the meantime, it has also been announced that our outgoing vicereign, Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., the Governor General, has accepted a position as a Canadian special envoy to the Republic of Haïti.
My compliments to the prime minister for apparently choosing to make such an announcement while the Queen is present; this is a move that assists in keeping our constitutional monarchy a contemporary and engaged institution. I won’t speculate on who might become the Queen’s next representative, but there is one particularly monarchist name being bandied about that I would be very much in favour of when the announcement comes to pass next week.
So, what are your impressions of the now-concluding term?
Has Michaëlle Jean done a good job as Governor General of Canada?
