Are you saying that people who are not Muslims or Christians are Atheists or Communists? You give Atheists too much credit.

What about Hindus? There are almost one billion Hindus in the world; it is the third largest religion, after Christianity and Islam. They are not Atheists, Atheism does not stem from them. What about Buddhists?

Muslims and Christians together probably comprise of half the world population. The other half is by no stretch of imagination Atheist.

I am not an agnostic JLM, no way, I don't sit around with
a question mark on my mind about 'is there a god' or not.
I do not know, but because I don't know, is not a reason
to think there might be a god, when we do find out in
eons from now, it will be scientific not makebelieve.

Hi Talloola- "Agnostic" is just the term for those who do not know, which includes all of us. There are a lot that don't know but won't admit it. From what I can gather they are still agnostics. :lol::lol:

perhaps you're right, I though an agnostic was one who sat
on the fence because he/she does not know, and left some
room in his thought process, that it could be a god who
is responsible for 'us'.

I think JLM is being mischievous on purpose. He knows that I am an Atheist, not an Agnostic. As to him saying that I don’t know if God exists, that is strictly speaking true, but that doesn’t mean that I am an Agnostic, I am very much an Atheist.

I wrote a very interesting post a while ago illustrating the difference between an Atheist and an Agnostic, let me see if I can find it and reproduce it here.

As the wifey keeps pointing out, there are different types of agnostics. There are the type that think we are not meant to know anything about gods, the type like my wife, who thinks gods are irrelevant, etc.
Atheists are those that disbelieve in gods. EG, there are none, there is an absence of them, there is nothing there in which to believe, etc.

Did you have bacon and eggs for breakfast today? I don’t know, but it is certainly possible. I am not sure what you had for breakfast. However, I think it is quite possible that you had bacon and eggs (or you had something else). On this subject, I am an Agnostic.

However, did you have tar sands and gasoline for breakfast today? Again, I don’t know, I wasn’t there when you had your breakfast. For all I know, you may be in a hospital ward right now, being treated for having ingested tar sands and gasoline.

However, the probability of you having tar sands and gasoline for breakfast is so small, so negligible that I can safely say that you did NOT have tar sands and gasoline for breakfast. Even though I am not 100% sure, I can say with perfect confidence that you did not have tar sands and gasoline for breakfast. On this subject, I am an Atheist.

It is the same with God. While I cannot say with 100% certainty that God does not exist, the probability of God existing is so minute, so negligible that I can say with perfect confidence that God does NOT exist.

"Interesting"? You don't have to look - an agnostic doesn't know an atheist doesn't believe, but the doesn't preclude an atheist from being an agnostic.

No way can an Atheist be an Agnostic as well, JLM. As I have illustrated in my post, the difference between the two is one of degree and not one of kind, but that is quite a difference.

No I am saying disbelief can also be not knowing. We are still on the topic of the Bible and Christianity.

I was thinking about the other thread concerning commandments.
But anyway, for some people disbelief may also be not knowing. But I think some atheists also "know" there aren't gods in the same way that the faithful "know" there are gods.
Besides, as I already said, there are a few types of agnostics, not just the one you seem to be fixated on.

Y.J. - One of the things that makes Canada a great country is a guy like that can say what he want's without fear of being shot or hanged. And YOU don't have to pay any attention to him. :smile:
