We can still swagger a little. There are more kids playing organized hockey in Canada than any other country in the world. I'm sure that one day China will produce a perfect team of automatons who will beat everyone, but hockey in Canada has been unpaid coaches getting up at five thirty in the morning to lace up twenty pairs of skates and teaching kids the finer points of the game. I did it for almost twenty years and so did thousands of others, for love of the game.

RIGHT ON, JUAN! It has also been thousands of mums and dads getting up in the wee hours of the morning or after work at night to take their kids to the rink. They do it for the same reason - the love of the game.

These Olympic games have brought people from all over Canada together cheering our athletes and singing Oh Canada. Should we win Olympic Gold in Hockey - watch out, the party will be wild.

GO, CANADA, GO! :canada:

Those "unpaid coaches" were the mums and dads who cared enough to show up at all the games and practices and ran the clock and provided taxi service for those kids who's parents who didn't.

Both our hockey teams at these Olympics are strong. Gold is certainly possible.

Canada and the u.s. women's hockey teams are great, very
high in talent and represent their countries well.

30 years ago I watched almost exactly the same in women's
hockey as we are seeing in this olympics.

In all that time, the other countries have done nothing
to raise the level of talent in their women's hockey.

If the other countries don't do something to bring their
teams up to par, so 'at least' they can compete at a level
where they have a bit of a chance, women's hockey will be
cancelled from the olympics, and so it should be, what we
see right now is not good enough, two teams that deserve
to play at an olympic level.
It is an embarrassment to watch such a low level of talent
in the olympic games, the participants should be of high
quality, and show how they have strived and worked hard
to reach an olympic level.

Canada and the u.s. could put in other teams from their
own countries, from rep teams, and those teams would
play at a higher level than any of the other teams in
the olympic games.

I wonder if the European women's teams have improved, but the two North American teams have improved more thereby raising the bar yet again. In the Ladies games so far, I've seen Canadian and American players using that old Bure trick of passing the puck forward between their skates to their sticks to avoid an opposing check. I don't remember seeing this in Women's hockey before.

I'm beginning to believe that the european and other teams
are just getting a free ride into the olympics on the
coat tails of the north american teams, they do nothing
to improve, do nothing to promote youth girls hockey, and
don't get the funding, and the bottom line is that, they
haven't done much of anything for 30 years or more.

None of them are new to hockey, we had players who
travelled to norway and sweden back in the 70's to
stay there and play, for a short time to promote women's/girls hockey.

All of my girls played hightly talented competative hockey
as kids, then as women, played against the guys many
times, and sometimes played right on the boys teams,
as well as the girls team. We had a great girls and
womens league on the lower mainland back then, with
extremely good players, and of course they are all even
better now, one of my daughters had a chance to try out
for the national team, but she was a little older by then,
and decided to turn it down, she was married by then,
and playing noon hour hockey with the guys, and didn't
have the deep desire to play and train at that level any
longer.
Any of our teams we had on the lower mainland, with exception of the little kids, could have defeated the
other teams in this olympics.
I hate to see women's hockey thrown out of the olympics,
but if this trend continues I'm afraid that is what will
happen, it is a drag on olympic image to see that every
four years.

Canada won in the shoot out ....3 - 2

I thought the refereeing was terrible. There was enough clutching and grabbing to have a rugby game.

Was it all one sided? I watched most of the game and didn't see anything too flagrant. Little more entertaining htan the last game.

lots of infractions let go,. but it was for both sides,
which makes it balanced, but we aren't used to all of
those things happening without calls, but last game there
were so many calls ref was ruining game.

Maybe we should see a game for a change without refs, just
linesmen. hmmmm, I'm seeing some interesting thing happening, could be fun. (keep an ambulance handy)

Who do we play next? USA? Even though we beat the swiss, were going to rebound off that and beat the states bad

That would be the worst mistake, when it comes to hockey you don't take any team or situation for granted, sh*t happens so fast.

yes, it is still a round robin, four teams in A section,
u.s., canada, switzerland, and norway, we all play each other
once.

That game against Switzerland pointed up how crowded the ice can be using NHL size ice in a fast, tight checking game. The fast, "in your face" style the Swiss were using was a bit of an equalizer. I hope the Canadian team can learn from that game and come back stronger. The Canadians are certainly as strong and definitely more skilled than the U.S., who are their next opponents, and I think we will have an edge but we will have to work hard and dictate the speed of the game to our own advantage.

You can bet the US learned from that game as well.

The Canadians just don't seem to know how to handle the Swiss; they certainly looked off their game.

It was interesting that Doughty sat on the bench for about 20 minutes after his second turnover resulted in a Swiss goal.

yeah, and from what I see the goalies will have a big say
in this tournament, as they have so far. Hiller was amazing, and last night nabokov and bryzgalov, (sp?) were
both brilliant, and brodeur was very good yesterday, and
made the difference in the shootout, and vokoun has been
playing great for the czechs, although we outshot the swiss
by lots, we didn't get it by hiller much at all.
Swiss goals were 'one cough up' and 'one lucky bounce' in
front of the net, so there is a fine line between winning
and losing.
Anyway I love the close competition, and the battle, it
won't be a cake walk for anyone.
