Need the unions or some non for profit business ,to do what they've been designed to do..Stand up for the abused(If they can afford the air time/advertising..).Perhaps people need to start standing up for themselves, instead of relying on unions and other self-interested organizations( who apparently ,are proving useless.)to assist them.Perhaps we should USE LESS of these organizations ..Make our own program..Time to organize and strike ourselves..(If that was legal..)..Call this bail-out /stimulus bluff what it was..Theft.fraud.ILLEGAL!.

.Put G.Bush and all other co-conspirators of B.S. bailouts, where they belong..Prison?

Go to back to promoting honest repectable practises that ensure transparentcy/accountability/effecientcy/balance/sustainability/prosperity/and last but not least SENSIBILITY...Is this being unreasonable?..Too much to ask for?...Is it sensible to think things will change for the better..?...Or let's keep blow'n up oil bubbles until it is all USELESS!

People who unite and stand up for a common cause are a union, through all these years the battle to crush unions has tried to pervert the meaning of unions of community of purpose. If you do not unite you will face every hurdle alone and be easily crushed quietly and no one will hear you.

The kind of issues we're talking about with Dhalla here, are ones involving people who don't have access to unions. So bringing unions into it is kind of besides the point. Generally speaking if you're in contact with a union, then you are free enough, educated enough, to not have your passport locked up in someone else's house, and believe that you'll be deported if you talk to anyone but them.

Interesting that you should say that. Here is a comment on the subject to the editor at TheTorontoStar:

I didn't know this, but amnot surprised. I've seen similar, and worse. This particular story is tame compared to some fo the stuff I've come across... in Canada.

Even the Government is using the "Hidden job market " to find slave drone/temp workers..People deserve good paying ,long term, secure employment..

Green/clean tech jobs are needed...

Time to stop the abuse..Government employment Programs don't work ..Government money traps

Now this I agree with. I have a friend going through Ontario Works right now, and what he tells me is trooly disappointing. He's been going through a six-month course paid for by the government, and will finish in about one or two months, I forget. But anyway, he tells me he's going to a private college, Everest College, where the teacher is obviously unqualified to teach. She spends most of the lessons chatting about her family and entertaining stories, adjusting grades to raise overall marks in class, etc. He tole me that he's gotten 100% on a number of test, yet still doesn't feel that he's grasped the content! He'dcomplained about htis numerous times to the government that pays for the course, and still nothing has been done. The teacher even lets students out early evry day, etc. etc. etc.

This is where our tax money is going, folks! I'm all for helping the less fortunate, but if that's how our money's being spent, then I'd rather give the money to the charity of my choice. Let's have some competition between charities, shall we, and scrap government corruption pretending to be charity.

Nobody deserves anything, but we all have a duty to help the less fortunate.

Not sure about other provinces, but BC has an outfit called the "Labor Relations Board" They have teeth and don't like nasty employers.

I know of one incident where the BC Labour Relations Board worked. A friend of mine handed in her two-weeks notice as per her contract, and asked her employer if she could use her as a reference. The employer happlity agreed.

Later, her job searched proved futile, but she couldn't figure out what was going on. So she got a friend to go through all the motions with her. The friend interviewed her, no problem. She looked at her resume. Again, no problem. Then she called the references, oops. The employer was saying nasty things about her. She went to the Labour Relations board and managed to make her ex-employer pay back-pay for all the time since she'd quit work, and had to continue paying her a salary until she should find a new employer. Served her right. An employer certainly has the right to not give a reference, but has no right to mislead a person like that by pretending she'll give a good reference.

So if you work for NASA, you should get your very own space ship?

I apologize for introducing the concept of "union" to the thread. Same for "Labor Relations Board".
But, if I were an illegal alien and pissed off at an employer, I think I'd raise a ruckus with the gov't about it because it'd eventually hit the wind anyway, and my chances of staying in the country may be better if I was the one that brought the matter to the attention of the right people.

Unions don't promote unity. They promote division between workers and management. Roberto Semler's co-operative model is far superior. He'd won an entrepreneur of the year award from both the Brazilian Communist Party and a Brazilian business magazine, in the same year!

If you want a more co-operative or unified approach, how about a workers' co-op, where workers are expected to risk some of their own money first and then get to manage it.

Illegal alien?

Now that's a whole other can of worms. If he's illegal, then he's just as guilty as the employer. I was thinking the whole time of foreigners on work visas. Big difference.

No. You should be able to buy your own spaceship. :D

So are you prepared to dish out more taxes so that the average Canadian Navy seaman can buy his own Navy ship?

And what about ship manufaturing workers? We'd have to raise their salaries pretty high for that, making the ships more expensive too.

And what about the farmer? He feeds us, but he should get just enough money ot feed himself. The logic is seriously flawed.
