Nope, gerryh's got it right, citing from the second link I gave, the man was a fake. I've no doubt he believed in himself, he wasn't a conscious fraud, just deluded. You're right that lots of people still believe in him, but that doesn't mean anything. Lots of people believe all sorts of stupid things without a shred of evidence: astrology, palmistry, graphology, reflexology, homeopathy, iridology, spirit channelling, astral projection, telepathy, telekinesis, clairvoyance, talking to the dead, dowsing... ah, the list is endless.

I think you have a lot of it right, Dex, but people have found water using a willow branch.

No they haven't, that's not what's going on, but most people don't know what's going on or how to think clearly about it. Dowsing doesn't work any better than chance, and no dowser has ever proven otherwise under properly controlled conditions. Dowsing doesn't work. Besides, drill a hole anywhere that water is geologically possible, and you'll almost always find it.

I've seen my uncle find water pipes in a field using some kind of twisted wire.
He was bang on. Don't know how he did it .

Usually a pin-flag is used. All that is a thin piece of steel wire. Get one for each hand and put a 90deg bend at one end about 8" from the end. Those two parts are held in your fist (up and down direction), the longer part is pointed straight ahead and the you walk slowly forward. Once you pass over a line that is flowing the wires will point at each other. At that point the line is right under the wires.
Dowsing with a willow is used for finding water, a bit more complicated (but not much) and some people are better at it than others. My father did it for lots of people but he had problems with the early electric watches, they just never ran right, gaining or losing time and some outright stopped.

Either way, I betcha there's a RATIONAL scientifically explanation for the phenomenon, whether it be delusion or subtle, electric/magnetic currents or some such thing. No hocus pocus involved.
It isn't hocus pocus, if it isn't flowing though it won't find it.

Yeah, there *is* a rational explanation for it. It's confirmation bias, selection bias, the ideomotor effect, magical thinking, post hoc fallacies, self deception, and a variety of other common errors in perception and thinking. No dowser has ever passed a proper test protocol. EVER. Not even with $1 million at stake and a protocol the dowsers agreed was fair and reasonable. Dowsing provably doesn't work. Not even a little bit.

And that's all I'm going to contribute to this hijack of a thread about Adam and Eve's children, even though I more or less started it by mentioning dowsing in a list of nonsensical ideas.

 Well JLM, if you think there's some substance to Edgar Cayce I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that you'd believe crap like that uncritically.

I don't think it's a matter of believing or disbelieving, in my years on the planet I've found very little to be completely true or completely false. Some people make their living by dowsing. Are you going to dispute them when the customer is quite happy with the result? Just because you can't do something doesn't mean it can't be done.

Dexter,

Me thinks you suffer from Black & White disease. There seems to be the whole spectrum of grays missing in your reality.
Life is exactly the way you believe it to be or at least that is how you will perceive it. I kinda like grays. Makes life more varied and interesting.

I don't think so. He either says something is BS and backs up his words, says something is right and is able to back that up, or else he says he doesn't know. I don't see that as black n white, but then I operate on the same principles.
The "I don't know" part can add an awful lotta color to the picture.

Hmmm, black, white, gray, my three worst colors, I'm an earthy person, I look good in
browns, rusts, greens and such.
Hope I can get by in life with those colors.;-)

Yes. Lots of frauds can claim many satisfied customers, that's not evidence that there's any substance to what they're claiming.

Uh huh. The Bible's where the two creation accounts appear. If you're claiming it's true that there were two creations, then you *are* saying the biblical accounts are true to some degree.

Let's try this one more time:

According to the Bible, this is how humanity was created

I did NOT say that's how it happened as I was not there as you can well imagine

There may be certain historical truths in the Bible. But much of it is questionable. After all, Jesus said his churches would be the site of many healing miracles and I do not know of even one church where anything like that happens.

Get it??
