Earth Hour: Turn Off the Lights!

Those in India or China who have electricity, (you know those who are as rich or richer than you) can turn off their lights just as easily as anyone here.

They already do that, Yukon Jack, every day.

Turn off the lights for an hour, it won't hurt you. Those who can't join in carry on with my blessings. I'll get my jacket on, smoke a joint and sit on the balcony playing my accoustic for an hour.

Unforgiven, the wife has gone to see belly dancing in the local library (I myself don’t care for the stuff). I intend to take a nap from 8:30 to 9:30.

Indeed. And didn’t you read me say that I am assuming it about China? India and China are quite similar in terms of their economic situation. If India does load shedding, I think it is a safe bet that China does so too. They probably call it by a different name.

I think you are loosing it. You're responding to my post where I am telling you I did not ask the question you answered by answering the question again. In a generic sense, in other words not a moral sense, it's dishonest for you to continue posting like you do.

Unforgiven, no doubt some people will. If they are turning off the lights on the pyramids, I assume they will turn lights off in some places in India as well (e.g. Taj Mahal).

But the point is, I will understand if they don’t do it, they do this every day, for several hours.

Well folks, I am signing off now. I am glad the thread generated plenty of discussion. At last count, it received 282 views, so I assume that many posters have become aware that there indeed is earth hour being observed today. I have done my bit, I did make people aware of the earth hour.

So as I said before, I intend to switch off the computer and take a nap. But remember,

by turning on all lights in the house until 8.30 pacific time.

Well folks, I am signing off now. I am glad the thread generated plenty of discussion. At last count, it received 282 views, so I assume that many posters have become aware that there indeed is earth hour being observed today. I have done my bit, I did make people aware of the earth hour.

So as I said before, I intend to switch off the computer and take a nap. But remember,

One easy way to save electricity is very simple.. This does not require you to do much more then to unplug a Power Supply that is not in use..

I don't think you helped your cause with your display. I think you created hostility to the whole thing by some where previously there may have been indifference at worst.

Sorry, Yukon Jack, Indians do their part every day (and I assume so do Chinese though I don’t know that). What earth hour is doing is telling the spoiled rotten people of developed world to experience for one hour what people in third world country experience every day (many of them don’t even have electricity).

I don’t think it is too much to do (well I suppose for a rabid anti-environmentalist, it is).

Er...did you see the amount of smog that surrounded the various places in China just before last year's Olympics? That smog was created by pollution, so to say that China is doing their part is not very accurate. They contribute as much pollution as anywhere else.

And I don't consider myself to be spoiled rotten just because I don't feel like dimming my lights for one hour.

Nuclear...Coal...Natural Gas...Hydroelectric...Wind...Biomass...
Canada uses these all for power generation....and they're all
renewable if you have the time and patience, thinking in terms
of Geological time frames. 8O :lol::lol::lol:

Well that was probably a waste of time. 99% of the apartments in my area had lights on. Odd that those people from 3rd world countries can't comply.

Well, I had a most refreshing nap. I actually overslept, getting up at 9.45. Anyway, people across the world are switching off the lights. It is too early to say what kind of response it generated, local time of 8.30 p.m. still has to travel around the world. However, I have the pictures of Parliament Building and Big Ben in London.

Shadowshiv, sure China could do more to curb pollution, we all could do more. I never said that China does enough to curb pollution. What I said is that as far as turning off the lights are concerned, India (and I assume China) do that every day. That in no way means that they do enough to curb pollution. Pollution in many cities in India and China is terrible, much worse than anything we see in our cities.

However, as far as switching lights off is concerned, they do their part.
