Source: Cuban Currency CUC - WoWCuba

US Dollars: There is a 10% penalty for exchanging US dollars for CUC. There is no fee for
Canadian dollars, Euros, Swiss Francs, or British pounds.

US Visitors : Before arrival we recommend purchasing Canadian dollars, Euros,
Swiss Francs or British pounds for exchange. USD are accepted but a 10% penalty
will apply.

The 10% penalty was made necessary by the US pressure on international banks as
reported by AP on Oct 25, 2005:

"The measure was tied to the U.S. Federal Reserve's decision in May to fine
Switzerland's largest bank, UBS AG, US$100 million for allegedly sending American

dollars to Cuba, Libya, Iran and the former Yugoslavia in violation of U.S. sanctions
against those countries. UBS agreed to pay the fine without admitting the
allegations."

Gotcha. I am sure that if the travel band is lifted or before the travel band is lifted that will be straightened out.

Funny. When we were there, US currency was all over the place except in banks and gov't.
Anyway, if the yanks are going to flood Cuba it'll be like what happened to Los Cabos, Cabos San Lucas, San Jose del Cabos, etc.; it'll turn touristy and ugly.

I get goose bumps thinking about it! The last bastion of Canada. The ONLY place where you could go and not see an American. Now they will be bellying up to the bar and slapping their palm down...

"HEY! What does a guy have to do to get a drink around here!"

I didn't see much US$ myself, but I did take 10 one dollar US bills
myself (tips for when I first got there, before I could exchange some
CAD for CUC & CUP). Canadian coins ($1 & $2) can't be exchanged
by the locals either (just folding money), so lots of people in the parking
lot at the airport selling (trading) Canadian coins for Canadian bills. 8O

We get those to so we should have nothing to worry about.

Perhaps you will see the old 70 years olds down there...

"I remember this place from the 50's! We used to... etc. etc"

Getting all loud and stuff.

Only a matter of time before MTV has their annual Spring Break down there.

You mean, SOME of you people have medical coverage?

Yeah, have to make an impression on the locals alright.

SOME people don't have coverage. But that does not mean they are not treated. The poor have the best coverage of all as they pay ZIP. If they get a case of the sniffles all they need to do is walk into an emergency room.

No ride? No problem...call an ambulance...it is free for them.

I am more for making an impression on the Canadians.
