I was reading hubby the story my sister posted recently (she's an occupational therapist), of a young boy whose father invested $2000 in a 3D printer, $10 in materials, and with an open source code, was able to print his son a functional prosthetic hand. He'll now, for $10 a pop, be able to print his son as many hands as he wants, whenever he needs, as well as parts for any that break. A typical prosthetic costs in the $10 000 range.

Hubby's reply?

"I wonder how long before they regulate the hell out of them, or make them flat out illegal."

Ever a jaded realist.

They are very reasonably priced considering the capabilities. $2000 will get you set up very nicely.

I can think of at least a Billion things I'd make.

I doubt $2000 gets you something capable of printing stainless steel, but they are still an absolutely mind boggling piece of tech.
