Pressure mounts on Ottawa over contentious pipeline

HALIFAX - A proposal to pump millions of litres of treated pulp mill waste into the Northumberland Strait is a clear case for Ottawa's toughest environmental review process, say veteran fisheries scientists — who contend many questions remain on how a swirl of sea life will mix with warm effluent and a changing climate.
(Its not just the warmth of the effluent -at a recently reported 67 degrees Celsius- that may be the problem! This is apparently the same kind of effluent that Atlantic Packaging has been dumping on fields in Durham Region for decades! And there has been a LOT of debate about how much should be allowed and how often - since the stuff contains various nasty compounds such as heavy metals- that can readily run into local wells as well as into Lake Ontario!)
(I know of one case where it was alleged by neighbours -worried about their well water- that more effluent than was permitted was dumped on a farmers hay field and the guy had to pay for an independent testing lab to verify what had been put on his fields! In dilute quantities the effluent is not especially dangerous- but how much is too much?)
The Strait touches three provinces, and the wider Gulf of St. Lawrence fisheries region is home to lobster and crab fisheries that brought in over $1.2 billion worth of catch in 2016.
(And the last thing we need is MORE TOXINS in the food we eat so the pipeline is becoming a BIG question mark!)
Bruce Hatcher, a Cape Breton University biologist, says Ottawa should appoint a panel to study the potential damage if Northern Pulp is allowed to pump 62 million litres of effluent daily from its Abercrombie, N.S., mill into the Strait.
"I believe this is a good example of a place that justifies a full environmental review," said Hatcher, who has studied marine ecosystems for over three decades.

The plan has raised the ire of local fishermen, the P.E.I. government and even Hollywood actor Ellen Page, who is from Halifax. A group of independent senators have also called for a full panel review by the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency.
"I've reviewed the documents, and whereas Northern Pulp seems to be adhering to 'best practices,' I do believe this project should be the object of a federal environmental assessment," lobster researcher Remy Rochette, the chair of biological science at the University of New Brunswick's Saint John campus, wrote in an email.
(TYPICAL LIE-berals! They can shrug off milli0ns of litres of sewage going into lakes and rivers! They can shrug off 62 million litres of effluent that would SICKEN YOU TO DRINK IT - going out into our marine ecosystem! But they cannot accept oil pipelines that only need decent maintenance so as not to leak!!!)

However, as a clock ticks down toward a provincial deadline, it remains to be seen if Ottawa will order a full-scale look at whether highly treated effluent — and the mix of chemicals and finely ground up biological materials it still contains — should receive the country's top level of environmental scrutiny.
(Yes- it’s mainly the chemicals mixed in with the organic waste product that causes debate over Atlantic Packaging waste in Durham Region!)
Provincial legislation forces the closure of effluent flowing to a facility at the heavily polluted Boat Harbour lagoon by Jan. 31, 2020, a commitment made by Stephen McNeil's government in 2015, after five decades of the waste water flowing into the estuary on the edge of the Pictou Landing First Nation.
(Boat Harbour is heavily polluted by effluent? Why then LIE-berals are offering nothing more than the marine equivalent of the old Inco Sudbury GIANT SMOKE STACK- that did not end acid rain- it just spread it more thinly over a wider area?)
The province plans a 50-day, level-1 environmental review, while a federal "full-panel" process could take up to two years after a referral by the federal environment minister, according to the environmental assessment agency.
Kathy Cloutier, the director of communications at Northern Pulp's parent firm Paper Excellence, said her company will submit a project description in early January, and she's confident the mill's treatment proposals will meet the test of either a federal or provincial review.
But a federal review means her firm would require the province to extend the deadline for ending use of the Boat Harbour estuary, she said.
(So basically what the company is offering is a bit more refining of waste product - and then shooting it MUCH FURTHER OUT TO SEA??????????)
"That's certainly one that's going to require an extended period of time ... to accommodate any environmental process, commissioning and construction of the new facility," she said in an interview.
That would throw the ball back into the province's court — where McNeil has repeatedly said he's committed to Pictou Landing First Nation to meet the 2020 deadline.
Chief Andrea Paul of the Pictou Landing First Nation said in a telephone interview that her band would not agree to any further extensions, as the company has known for years that a federal review was possible.
A spokeswoman for the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency said in an email it's reviewing fisheries groups' requests for an independent panel review — and is awaiting a final pipeline route and proposed project from the company.
(So they ARE COUNTING VOTES - before acting! And if the votes are there then the HELL WITH the LIE-beral environment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(And shall we guess that LIE-berals would rather have the pulp mill than a soild fishery? Fishermen need to be regulated and checked on to make sure they are not exceeding their catch allowances- and checking fishermen is costly as they are out at sea!)
(But checking on pulp workers is MUCH easier since they are on land and one needs only check- how many hours worked and what rate of pay and now show us your income tax receipts! Yes- it looks like LIE-berals can save gravy by preferring pulp workers to fishermen!)
Under the province's class-1 review, the proponent does much of the work to determine potential impacts, and reviewers look at the result, along with a public commentary period.
The province has said it's not applying its higher level-2 review, where outside experts would oversee the process, because a new pipeline and treatment facility is considered a "modification" of an existing facility.
(That`s ODD! LIE-berals have complained about allowing corporations to be “self regulating when Conservatives did it and now LIE-berals consider it expedient to allow self regulating and self oversight of pulp industry - that may damage a valuable fishery!)
Michael van den Heuvel, an expert on environmental toxicology and the director of the Canadian Rivers Institute at the University of Prince Edward Island, says he understands why the fishermen would be concerned, but doesn't think damage to their catch is likely.
"In my opinion, in terms of environmental damage, I don't see grounds for stopping it (the pipeline)," he said in an interview.
Van den Heuvel, who has worked with the pulp and paper industry to study effluent effects on marine life, said concerns about chlorinated dioxins and furans have been significantly reduced as methods that produced the compounds were phased out. "The switch to chlorine dioxide effectively got rid of most of those compounds," he said.
(Oh- MOST of the dangerous compounds are now gone? Says a sometimes employee and servant of the industry? If a Conservative said such a thing we know how LIE-bereals would SCREAM with indignation!)
However, research by two DFO scientists published last year found that when lobster eggs are released they rely on the currents of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and drift for three to 12 weeks after release.
Marine biologists working with fisheries groups say that raises the possibility of multiple exposures to the fresh water effluent reaching the Strait. The area where the pipeline is planned for, known as fisheries area 21, helps seed six other areas described in the study.
Further DFO research is showing some lobster larvae are retained for up to 120 days and some actually end up west of where they started, defying previous expectations.
(So independent Fisheries Ministry scientists suggest THERE IS ENVIRONMENTAL RISK- while pulp company researchers tell us to relax - there is nothing to worry about!)
Rochette viewed the company's public presentation and the counter arguments from fishing groups, and concluded Ottawa should be involved.
"That the treatment plant functions at accepted standards does not speak to long-term and cumulative impacts of different discharge components. I believe these impacts should be assessed and considered before moving ahead with these kinds of projects, but perhaps particularly in this case given that the Northumberland Strait supports important fisheries, including for American lobster."
(Acceptable govt standards allow a trillion litres or more of raw sewage to be dumped in our lakes and rivers every year! Should we blindly trust such sloppy govt standards?)
The company says various regulated emissions, such as the amount of organic material and suspended solids in the effluent, would be well within federally regulated limits.
(Uh- huh and that IS the question- are the federal limits USEFUL?)
Regulated compounds such as nitrogen and phosphorous are dissolved in the massive flow of saltwater to the point where they blend into levels in surrounding waters just two metres from the pipe outlet, according to the consultant hired by Northern Pulp.
The company says most other regulated factors, from water temperature to salinity, fade to background levels within 100 metres.
(But would the consultant be WILLING to drink a daily glass of that effluent -taken from close to that outfall- for several years running? Would the consultant be willing to act as Guinea Pig while we monitor the heavy metals building up in his body? There is clearly NO long term testing being done or even considered!)
"We're confident in the science, we're confident in the project. With 131 kraft mills operating in North America and 20 per cent operating our proposed system ... we have no concern about an environmental assessment, be it federal or provincial," said Cloutier.
(This sounds like another Sudbury style massive chimney! Back in the 1980`s, INCO built a HUGE smoke stack- 1000 feet high - to disperse its acid rain over a much larger area with the intention of reducing the environmental damage! And of course it did not reduce pollution- it just moved it around some! Which is obviously the goal for both raw sewage and pulp effluent being dumped into our water ways by LIE-beral “defenders of the environment!!!!!!!)
Hatcher says he understands the argument of "diffusion is the solution to pollution," where the proposed water effluent may diffuse to the point of harmlessness into a current that mainly flows west to the Atlantic.
But he said major changes are coming to the Strait from climate change, and research suggests the waters may become more like a swirling washing machine than a conveyor belt to deeper waters.
(So there are good odds the filth WILL BUILD UP OVER TIME!)
"We're at the beginning of the fast accelerating point of global climate change. Any standard predictive models of what water does in the Northumberland Strait ... with every passing year are less valid," he said.

Violent snowflakes make conservatives on campus unsafe

Springtime may be in bloom, but snowflakes never go out of season at America's most prestigious colleges and universities.
Quivering students at the University of Notre Dame launched a protest last week against the school's decision to invite Vice President Mike Pence as commencement speaker. Activist Imanne Mondane told the campus newspaper that she and her peers felt "unsafe" and threatened by "someone who openly is offensive but also demeaning of their humanity and of their life and of their identity."
In other words: The mere presence of a public official whose policy positions veer from acceptable left-wing norms is a public safety hazard.
(As some wise person once observed: LIE-berals believe so profoundly in their own beliefs that any dissenting voice is not just wrong but represents a personal attack that LIE-berals meet with quivering outrage.)
At Wichita State University, the student government voted to refuse official recognition of the libertarian Young Americans for Liberty group because it supports -- gasp! -- the First Amendment. Since other chapters of the group across the country have invited controversial conservative speakers to their campuses, the Kansas safe-spacers argued, it would be "dangerous" to allow them to operate in Kansas.
(There it is-not just closed LIE-beral minds but Fascist minds willing to savagely attack any dissenting voice no matter what points may be presented!)
And at Duquesne University, students have now declared that welcoming a Chick-fil-A on campus would put their "safe place" at "risk" because the founders of the fast-food company defended traditional marriage.
What the cluck? These millennial chicken littles have grown softer than the insides of waffle fries.
While they hype the existential dangers of exposure to discomfiting ideological dissent, the bubble-wrapped brigade ignores the real menaces in the academy.
Take vengeful Fresno State professor Lars Maischak. He's been on the loose on social media, tweeting earlier this year that "Trump must hang." Just to be clear, he added: "The sooner and the higher, the better." In retaliation the administration's crackdown on illegal immigration, Maischak proclaimed, "two Republicans" should be "executed" for "each deported immigrant."
Using the hashtag "#TheResistance," Maischak tweeted: "Has anyone started soliciting money and design drafts for a monument honoring the Trump assassin, yet?"
The unhinged academic also tweeted a photo of a bullet with the caption: "Finally discovered! A cure for racism. Take one, administered straight to the cranium."
I can't say "lock and load" or do the "Charlie's Angels" finger gun pose without being accused of inciting violence. But this assassination-obsessed loon can tweet his twisted heart out on Twitter with impunity. Where's that Twitter Safety Council when you need it? Of course, Maischak denies harboring any hatred and claims he's the innocent target of a "digital lynch-mob."
Meanwhile, real mobs set fire to U.C. Berkeley to protest speaker Milo Yiannopoulos, injured a professor at Middlebury College while hounding conservative speaker Charles Murray off campus, and assaulted conservative speaker and Vice Media co-founder Gavin McInnes at New York University.
As Manhattan Institute scholar and "The War on Cops" author Heather MacDonald recounted in City Journal, she became "the target of such silencing tactics two days in a row last week" at Claremont McKenna College and UCLA. Baying protesters chanted, "We are here to shut down the f---ing fascist" and "From Oakland to Greece, f--- the police." She was forced to livestream her talk from an empty room while agitators pounded on the windows outside. Then she was whisked away in an unmarked Claremont Police Department van.
Who's unsafe on campus? The social justice mobsters play victim but wield bloodied brass knuckles in the ivory tower against any and all who threaten their orthodoxy and power.
(I am inclined to suggest that this mob mentality represents a logical intellectual progression: the more power and money govt takes for itself, the more responsibility it scoops up at the same time! A hundred years ago things happened through Gods Will-now its all govt dealing. Your business is failing? Get a govt subsidy. Housing costs are too high? Get “affordable housing” courtesy of govt. Cannot find a job? Govt should arrange one for you! If govt wont help you its because they are bigots-such is the logic of modern times!)

Two years into the Trudeau government’s term and the veneer of the “sunny ways” imagery has started to fade away to reveal a darker undercurrent of dangerous ideological division. We have seen how the steady tax increases by the Liberal government under the guise of taxing the so-called wealthiest 1% have stealthily evolved into attempts to tax the tips of hospitality and service workers.
We have seen attempts to eliminate tax relief for families impacted by health challenges, such as diabetes, autism or mental health. Now, we are witnessing this same divisive and ideological movement set federal funding of youth employment in its crosshairs.
Without any consultation whatsoever, the Trudeau government began to apply an ideological litmus test to the popular Canada Summer Jobs program. This decades-old program supports students looking for summer employment by providing grants to community organizations doing programming over the summer.
Groups hire students to deliver largely seasonal programs, from summer day camps for children, to museums, farmers’ markets, tourism and other community causes. These jobs are a huge win for both the student and the community. In Durham region, I have seen firsthand how the federal grants allow municipal governments, cultural organizations, tourism operators, non-profits, churches of all faiths and charities fulfill their programming for the summer.
(These organizations traditionally run anything from summer camps to soup kitchens. Most of the organizations are main stream religious groups such as Salvation Army!)
(But of course LIE-berals have created an “attestation form” which obligates grant seekers to AGREE IN WRITING to LIE-beral values on abortion and gay rights- and these are things that many Christian religious groups will not agree to! But of course Muslim groups operating within the Taaqiya framework which allows Muslims to LIE to infidels in defence of Islam - have had NO PROBLEM signing on to the new LIE-beral form which they will repudiate later at their convenience!)
(So our not so tolerant LIE-berals have set up a grant system that rewards LIARS while short changing honest Christians! A couple of years back a Muslim Imam in Calgary explained to his cheering supporters that Allah allows Muslims to KILL GAYS to prevent them from sinning in future! In light of this - any Muslim assurance that they fully support gay rights rings very hollow!)
Never have any of these organizations been forced to sign a legal attestation that relates to the religious or moral views of the group. But this is exactly what the Trudeau government has done.
For anyone familiar with the Canada Summer Jobs program, it was clear that the Liberals wanted to specifically exclude faith groups from the program or, at the very least, cause fewer groups with connections to faith communities to apply.
(The LIE-beral “attestation of values” that LIE-berals now want these mostly religious groups to sign on to is anathema to most of them! How can people holding strong religious views agree in writing that - can be used against them later if they are critical of LIE-beral policy such as abortion should be made freely available? Or that the bible is wrong to tell us that being gay is against Gods Law?)
(Various Christian groups have refused to sign the LIE-beral attestation of values and have thus been denied govt grants! And there IS the LIE-beral goal- to SILENCE ANY CRITIC of LIE-beral policy!)
(Yet Muslim groups - whose Quran carries specifications against abortion and gays that are more harsh than the bible have NO trouble getting grants- because Muslims WILL LIE! Muslims consider a written promise of values to a LIE-beral to be worthless paper! Quran also contains explicit instructions permitting a Muslim to LIE to an infidel for the good of Islam!)
(Our LIE-beral govt is demonstrating its hatred of western Christian/Jewish social and political values! LIE-berals are doing all they can to fight “white privilege” which translates into destroying western values as completely as possible! LIE-beral hate of white people is so strong they see nothing wrong with sending Cdn aid money to Muslim terror group Hamas!)

Canadians expect the Government of Canada to stand up for, and respect, all rights enshrined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. It is not up to Justin Trudeau to pick or choose which rights Canada respects and defends.
(Sadly the LIE-beral inspired Human Rights but too often Wrong Kangaroo Courts have been deciding for us which rights to defend for several decades now!)
(In one case- a Catholic print shop owner was approached by a gay customer and asked to print up a batch of gay positive posters- and the printer declined- explaining his religious convictions and offering up the names of other printers who WOULD do the job- for the same price!)
(Our Human Rights Poobahs hauled the printer into their Kangaroo Court and fined him for his “hate crime”! LIE-berals are pushing their version of social values well beyond what our LAW actually allows for! Who gave LIE-berals the abritrary right to decide that sexual preference should trump religious values?)
(And yet- when a Calgary Imam stood in front of a cheering crowd and explained that Quran permits Muslims to KILL GAYS SO THEY WILL STOP SINNING- LIE-berals had nothing to say!!!!!!!)
(And of course LIE-berals have long been vexed that some Cdn doctors refuse to perform abortions due mainly to religious convictions! LIE-berals would like to remove that right- but have not DARED- so far- to attack doctors so publicly!)
The freedoms of religion, thought and speech are all fundamental rights Canadians not only enjoy, we have fought for them at home and abroad. We know that a vibrant democracy means that on some issues, Canadians will understandably have different views. But respecting our democracy means that you respect that Canadians have the right to hold different views and you will not punish or isolate them for those differences.
While Justin Trudeau uses the slogan, “Diversity is our strength,” he has demonstrated time and again that he does not extend that diversity to thought or conscience. The Liberal government should strive to respect the fundamental rights and freedoms of all Canadians, and support summer job creation accordingly. They cannot just pick and choose only those that suit their political interests.
A very smart political observer told me that there is an inherent condescension at the core of the Trudeau government. He said that the Liberals don’t just disagree with their political opponents, but they feel that anyone who opposes their view simply “doesn’t understand Canada.”
(Pierre Trudeau told us that he wanted to destroy what he called “Cdn Imperialism” and this involved taking us out of NATO and abandoning our allies at the height of the Cold War against the evil Soviet Union! Pierre went so far as to call the war against Nazi Germany as “British Imperialism”! Pierre evenv wrote of what he called “the genius of Chairman Mao in rushing 30 million Chinese to the gallows” during The Great Leap Forward! Yes- the Trudeau family approves of mass murder by Soviet dictators! How else to explain Trudeau family support for bloody handed Cuban dictator Castro?)
(But modern LIE-berals have evolved new terminology and now speak of white privilege- and LIE-berals seek to paralyse our parliament with”electoral reform” and seek to buy a horde of anti white and pro LIE-beral voters with their out of control open border policies!)
This same conceited attitude and rhetoric is shockingly underscored by attempting to exclude people of faith from community programming across Canada. First, they tried to roadblock church groups from organizing to bring Syrian refugees into Canada, and now they don’t want kids to get summer jobs at camp.
Their approach is not just unfair, it is eerily reminiscent of George Orwell’s 1984 “Thinkpol” thought police and must be challenged.
We are made stronger by differences of opinion on faith and conscience. Keeping young people out of community work sponsored by faith groups means an entire generation won’t be as well-equipped to think and believe for themselves. What kind of sunny ways are those?
