The loud protesters who chanted “there is only one solution, intifada revolution” — and even attempted to injure a federal cabinet minister — at Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) Saturday night must feel like they’re in charge. Maybe they are, now.
Just like that, there would be no gala dinner for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Italian counterpart, Giorgia Meloni, inside the art gallery. Outside, cabinet minister Ahmed Hussen, who represents a Toronto riding, had something thrown at him twice by Pro-Hamas protesters as he unsuccessfully attempted to enter.
“Due to security concerns, the event was cancelled,” the Prime Minister’s Office told CBC News.

It was a gross scene unbecoming Canada and Toronto. Toronto Police have not made any arrests so far. But there needs to be some consequences.
Pro-Hamas demonstrators have been calling for a “shut down” of Canada for weeks, and Saturday night, they achieved it. They had more planned for Sunday at a York Region synagogue — organizers on social media even taunted police to “bring out the cavalry for this one.”
It’s all caught on video, and police have shown they do review those and lay charges later. Targeting anybody, let alone a cabinet minister, can’t be glossed over. It’s unacceptable. Police should consider laying charges on whoever organizes or pays these protesters, as well. Luckily, it wasn’t truckers who stopped Trudeau’s dinner with Italian Prime Minister Meloni.
Police, then, would have been given the nod to clear out the protesters with any means necessary to ensure everybody got into the AGO. Instead, a pro-Hamas throng of about only 100 strong were able to block every door, barring entry of cabinet ministers and invited guests.
Freedom Convoy protesters in Ottawa in 2022 never acted like this. The trucks from across the country blocked Wellington St. in front of Parliament Hill but didn’t impede anybody from getting anywhere by foot as we saw at the AGO.

A global network of Muslim thought leaders convened in Toronto on Sunday afternoon to discuss ways to combat antisemitism coming from within their community.

Well, that's a good thing. Highly unlikely to be a shining success, but better than discussing ways to advance and strengthen anti-Semitism.
I thought it was a feel good story. Uniting opposing viewpoints towards an actual middle ground. Long overdue and welcomed in my opinion, but controversial due to its nature of finding common ground.
After several consecutive incidents of anti-Israel mobs besieging Jewish sites and public events with minimal opposition, police in Toronto and Montreal are facing open accusations from senior politicians, business figures and Jewish groups that they’ve abandoned the streets to lawlessness.

Neither is true,” Toronto Police spokeswoman Stephanie Sayer wrote in a statement to the National Post adding that officers are being overwhelmed by an unprecedented number of demonstrations and other protest actions.
She said the job of the police is to keep everyone safe while “also upholding the constitutionally protected right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.” Doing so “requires a delicate and thoughtful approach to navigating situations where multiple factors or interests need to be managed carefully.” Etc…Honk-Honk?

Saturday, a public talk in Toronto featuring Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and visiting Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was cancelled due to the venue’s entrances being blockaded by anti-Israel demonstrators. Minister of International Development Ahmed Hussen was even the target of projectiles as he approached the building under a police escort.
On Monday, Montreal’s Federation CJA building — a building hosting the Montreal Holocaust Museum — was besieged by anti-Israel demonstrators attempting to force the cancellation of a talk featuring visiting IDF soldiers.
Video circulated by the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs — one of the event’s organizers — showed demonstrators screaming “death to Israel, death to the Jews” in Arabic, as well as chants of “Allahu Akbar” (Arabic for “God is great”).
And just last night, attendees at a Liberal Party fundraiser in Downtown Toronto faced shoves and jeers by masked anti-Israel crowds barring the entrance.
A video taken by protest-watcher Caryma Sa’d shows an attendee asking police to clear a path through the crowd. “Can everyone just move to the side?” asks a Toronto Police officer. The crowd ignores him and enters into a chant of “shut it down.”
At least they’re keeping it peaceful. Glass half full.

Nobody can be indifferent to the suffering in the Gaza Strip amid the Israel-Hamas war, and Canadians have a right to protest and make their anger heard, he (Justin) said but Trudeau said he expects Canadians, including police, to act within the law and make sure everyone can feel safe.

For the prime minister’s security detail, this was a slippery slope. Sure the polls may show the prime minister going downhill, but this was one case where he was doing it with style! Yes, that was Justin Trudeau on a snowboard being accosted by pro-Palestinian demonstrators on a skill hill. But...
“I called for a ceasefire in December, and I’ll keep calling for a ceasefire,” said the prime minister, who quickly aimed his board south and slid off into the winter day, leaving the protesters on the hill with no comeback. As snowboarders say, it was a ‘slam, eat it’ moment. At 52, Trudeau looked like a snowboard dude teenager! These protesters in Thunder Bay didn’t have a chance. And the video shows that as Trudeau left them in the Pow Pow complete with a Face Shot.
It’s just a matter of time before someone is going to be hurt at one of these protests because tempers are flaring at them on all sides. Trudeau can help this himself by addressing it directly and suggesting that all protests about the war in Gaza be limited to the front of Parliament Hill, Queen’s Park or Toronto City Hall and not be intimating regular people, small business or places of worship, schools, comedy clubs or daycares.
(It’s lost on no one that never once during the 2022 Freedom Convoy, with its hot tubs and bouncy castles and Emergencies Act declaration, did a trucker ever try to get close to the prime minister or physically assault people trying to get into events or offices)
There’s plenty to legally protest Trudeau for but sneaking up on him on a ski hill and putting him at risk is not crunchy.
