there would be no pipeline to resolve the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is a FINE EXAMPLE of how little interest...................................
LIE-berals really have with environmental issues!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is an article commenting on a dirty little secret that our municipal leaders DO NOT want to discuss!!With some comments of my own in brackets):
Mom troubled after learning home's water may be contaminated with lead
By Sarah Rieger, CBC News June 20, 2019
A Calgary mom is anxiously awaiting the results of tests to find out if her family has been drinking lead-tainted water.
A Calgary mom was unnerved to find out she and her two young children may have been drinking and bathing in lead-contaminated water at their home for the past year.
Rikia Novotny received a letter from the city at the start of June as part of its annual water testing program, informing her that her northwest Calgary home may be connected to a city water system with lead pipes.
(And there is the DIRTY SECRET- Cdn municipalities regularly installed LEAD water pipe until the early 1970`s!! And since the stuff has a service life of close to 150 years- it will be some time in the TWENTY SECOND CENTURY before govt is motivated to replace it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(Just because you live in a new subdivision is no protection from lead exposure!! Your new home may be connected to OLDER supply lines- so that your water supply passes through lead pipe on its way to your modern installation!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Novotny said she was told the city will test her water for free and will notify her of the results in October. And if the levels of lead in the water are higher than Health Canada guidelines, the city will help her determine next steps.
(In Durham Region - one of the recommended “next steps” is to run the water for a few minutes to get water that is “cleaner” as it has not been sitting in nearby lead pipe- picking up contamination!! The idea is to drain away water that has been held in lead pipe and draw in water that has been sitting in plastic pipe!! But of course nobody can say HOW MUCH lead pipe there really is in the system!!!!!!!!)
"It's just unnerving that we've been there for a year and that we could have been drinking lead water for the last year. There's a bit of a panic," she said, adding the situation feels out of her control because she rents the house.
(And it will take MONTHS before the city can let her know the test results? When a lab can do the job- in Days?????????????????)
In March, Health Canada updated its guidelines for lead in drinking water to reduce the maximum safe concentration to five parts per billion.
(To bad there is NO legal obligation to retro-fit old lead water pipe as municipal govt has decided such remedial work would cut into THEIR GRAVY Supply!!!!)
According to the agency, while lead can cause cancer, the more worrying effect is its induced toxicity in the blood — which has been shown through studies to reduce IQ in children and cause adverse cognitive and behavioural effects, as well as increased blood pressure and renal disfunction in adults.
Novotny doesn't have a car, so she's been walking to the nearest grocery store, two kids in a stroller in tow, to get water jugs. They've been going through about one-and-a-half 11 litre jugs each day, and the prospect of repeating that routine until the test results come back in October is daunting.
And even then, she doesn't know what will happen next.
"I'm sure it's not an inexpensive fix," she said.
(No I guess it is NOT a cheap solution!! Reverse osmosis systems that are high quality enough to remove lead cost in the hundreds of dollars and require a new filter every 6 months!! You are a CAPTIVE audience for the sale of replacement filters!! And as most of this stuff comes from CHINA- built in OBSOLESCENCE and eventual lack of replacement parts is pretty much GUARANTEED!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(It is possible that the woman`s landlord may chose to replace any lead pipe on his property as a virtue making his property more attractive to renters- but of course if the lead contamination is on CITY LAND then nothing will be done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
The letter Novotny received lays out a few options for minimizing lead levels in water, like flushing pipes for a few minutes before each use and installing a NSF-53 certified water filter, which "will remove most of the lead." Unlike other water contamination issues, boiling water will not remove lead content.
The city provides a $100, one-time rebate to allow someone to install a water filter in their home — so Novotny's kitchen sink could be filtered, but not the bathroom sink or shower.
As for replacing the lead pipes? That's complicated.
(Oh yes- and such “complication” is very likely the reason it will take MONTHS for this woman to get test results!! The city HOGS are hoping she will solve their problem BY MOVING ELSEWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
Russ Dueck, a senior infrastructure planning engineer with water resources with the city, says there are two sides to the water service line connected to the water main — public and private.
If both the homeowner's side of the property and the side on public property have lead pipes, the city will only replace its portion if the homeowner agrees to pay for the cost to replace their side as well — which averages $10,000 to $20,000.
(And there is more civil service FAKE NEWS!! I have seen streets where the govt replaced lead pipe that was directly under street paving- but they LEFT IN PLACE lead pipe on govt property that was under gravel shoulders and under lawns!! Govt replaced what was best FOR THEM and screwed the home owners who had NO WAY of knowing what kind of pipe lurked under lawns and sidewalks!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(In addition there are home owners who have lead pipe -installed by the city when the home was built and then forgotten!! Most of the old lead installations have a section of brass pipe running through the floor to the water meter- as brass is a stronger and more rigid metal that can be screwed in place to hold the weight of the water meter- thus people who take a casual look at their service pipe see only NON TOXIC metal and do not realize what is lurking only a few feet away!!!!!!!!)
"It's a somewhat complicated asset issue," he said. "A lot of industry research has found that just replacing the public side can in some cases actually create a worse situation with respect to lead in the water … we don't want to make a bad situation or health situation worse."
Dueck said there are about 550 homes in Calgary that have lead pipes on the public side, and it's unknown how many have lead on private property.
(The city DOES NOT KNOW and DOES NOT CARE what may have been installed on private property!! They HAD RECORDS when the homes were built- but over the years those records “have been lost”!! So say the HOGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
He said most of those homes were built between 1939 and 1947, and lead was used because of copper shortages due to Second World War efforts. Another potential source of contamination could be the home's plumbing itself — lead was used in some builds until plumbing codes changed in the 1980s.
(And there is HOG FAKE NEWS!! Lead was used up till the 1970`s- municipal HOGS in the GTA have ADMITTED THIS in the past!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
If lead is found in a home, Dueck said the city will then physically verify whether the lead piping is on the public or private side. If it's just the city's side, it will get replaced, but if it's on both, then the city contacts the homeowner to see if they're willing to pay for their side's replacement.
"The city's position here would be that there needs to be some participation from the owner of that parcel to address the issue," he said.
(And just HOW would anybody know there might be lead pipe around their home? The stuff is BURIED- and the only time it is uncovered is when a problem surfaces and city crews come around to make a repair- but city crews KNOW that lead pipe is a BIG ISSUE for the public so their habit is to dig, to repair and TO COVER BACK UP, QUICKLY - I have watched them do it often enough!!!!!!!!!!)
Novotny still doesn't know whether her landlord knew about the lead pipe situation before she moved in and she'll be waiting to see what they do based on the results of the test. But if there is high lead contamination, she doesn't think a single filter will cut it.
(Obviously having the landlord replace the roughly 20ft of lead pipe on private property- leading into the home WILL NOT CUT IT if there is another 20- 50ft of lead pipe out on city property -leading to the water main - that they have “forgotten” about and are thus leaving in place for the next 50 years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
(As previously mentioned- it seems to be standard city policy to simply BURY as much as possible- and then to DENY ALL!! City workers will hide behind all manner of excuses!! A favorite is to blame Regional Govt for either not getting suitable documents from towns or to blame the switch over from paper records to computer- and it is just amazing how much stuff got lost or FORGOTTEN during that process !!!!!!!!!!)
