PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) -- The festively lit spruce that will light the halls of the Rhode Island State House this December will have a more holiday-specific moniker this year, and one local clergyman is pleased with the governor's decision.

The title of this thread is a misnomer. The only people who get imposed on are the ones who allow it to happen.
Anyone who wishes to replace terms, greetings etc. pertaining to Xmas should just kindly be told to F**K OFF.

I don't think he's quite got over the death of Jacob Marley yet.

Christ that is a long time, back when I was in Grade 7, Jacob Marley had been dead for 7 years at that time. -:)

This is my favourite time of time. I absolutely love Christmas. Victoria Square, in front of the town hall of Bolton, the town where I live, is absolutely festooned with Christmas lights, and there are usually two Christmas trees, one on either side of the front of the town hall next to the fountains.. Usually they are switched on by a celebrity and the switch on is watched by hundreds of people. I love walking around town in the evening in the weeks up to Christmas, and looking at all the Christmas lights and listening to the choirs singing Christmas carols. At the moment they are currently setting up an ice skating rink at the side of the town hall.

Bolton Christmas lights, 2002

This Thursday sees the lighting of Trafalgar Square's Christmas tree. Since 1947 Norway has given the people of Britain a Christmas Tree as a thank you to them for liberating their country from Nazi rule. The tree is always erected in Trafalgar Square.

The Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is usually a Norwegian spruce (Picea abies) over 60 feet high and 50-60 years old. It is selected from the forests surrounding Oslo with great care several months, even years, in advance. The Norwegian foresters who look after it describe it fondly as 'the queen of the forest'.

The tree is felled in November during a ceremony in which the Lord Mayor of Westminster, the British ambassador to Norway and the Mayor of Oslo participate. It is brought to the UK by sea, then completes its journey by lorry. A specialist rigging team erects it in the square using a hydraulic crane. It is decorated in traditional Norwegian fashion, with vertical strings of lights - energy-efficient light bulbs are used.

For many Londoners the Christmas tree and carol singing in Trafalgar Square signal the countdown to Christmas. The Christmas tree in the square provides a central focus for carol-singing in the evenings, when different groups perform Christmas carols in the square, raising funds for voluntary or charitable organisations.

On 8 December, the public can join a torchlit procession for the Blessing of the Crib at the steps of St Martin-in-the-Fields church in Trafalgar Square. Designed by Tomaki Suzuki, the crib will be on display throughout December.

How is it a misnomer? I certainly agree that the only ones who are imposed upon are those who allow it, but the fact that they allow it doesn't mean they haven't been imposed upon.

This is a classic case of whiny children getting their way by being whiny children.

If you want to "split hairs" perhaps I could have phrased it better. Religious fanatics are what they are - mainly a$$holes, but to lay the blame on them for victimizing the victims isn't quite right either as the victims are mainly victims of their own lack of intestinal fortitude (I'm trying to think of the 4 letter word for that)

Ah wishing people a Merry Christmas is somehow offencive to some. Putting up
a Christmas tree on government property is offencive to some. Why? It has been
part of the historical landscape since forever. I do not see how it pushing religion
down anyones throat. There is a difference. A tree and a hearty Merry Christmas
are part of a celebration where not only Christians partake. Many others in our
society celebrate the Sikhs do I know many they are not Christians but they are
respectful. Muslims believe it or not share a measure of belief in Christ as he is
the number two prophet in their religion.
When it turns to shoving it down peoples throat is when they try to legislate the
faith into law. Even in the law courts where everyone has to swear on the Bible
about truth. I believe many parts are true in the Bible I also believe some of it
is not true. When municipalities show favour to the churches because the
councillors are member of the church that is pushing things down peoples throats.
Saying Merry Christmas and having trees in homes and on government property is
not. Besides the Sikh parades. and other religions hold festivities on public land
so what's the difference.

Little Eugene and his sister Ester don't feel included so it's offensive.

Much ado about nothing.
As is all religion. Until they get to killing folks.

What's with the 1940s and 1950 Christmas carrols in commercials? Did the moonbats on Madison Ave do a survey to find which one piss people off the least? I am grateful that I'm not hear Yoko Ono's off key caterwauling every 8 minutes,

+1 for use of caterwauling in a sentence!

And the City of Boston has the people of Halifax NS to thank for the Christmas tree they deliver to the city each and every year.

Thanks Canada!

In eternal gratituide for the charity of the people of Boston following the great Halifax Explosion of 1917!

Still hate the Bruins though. Except for Lucic--good Vancouver kid.

Why would it have a corporate name, Nova Scotia donates it, it's about the relationship between them and Boston, not about corporations. The only name (I can find for it) is the 'Boston Common Christmas Tree'.

I think he knows that.
