They can't because they are genetically damaged. Lots of people can't reproduce themselves, either but their bodies are composed of billions of independent living beings that are constantly reproducing themselves. Mules and people are composed of colonies of cells that reproduce until we die (maybe, a bit beyond that, even). Sperm are no such thing.
