Petros - pardon my ignorance but I don't understand what that means.

If there is a war zone, why would a civilian aircraft go over that area??

The equipment Russian and Ukrainians use pick up civilialian aircraft beacons and they know not to fire.

When fielded, a Buk firing battery consists of:

the 9S18M1Target Acquisition Radar used to acquire potential aerial targets, and transmit their position and tracks to:
the 9S470M1 Command Post (CP) vehicle (contains the missile battery's data display and control system; digital fire-control computer, which assigns targets to individual launchers, and computes the engagement)
one or more 9A310M1S launchers each armed with four radar-guided missiles.
All three of these systems are vehicle-mounted.

In a normal engagement, all three would operate as an integrated weapon system, and the crew of the Command Post vehicle are likely to have a good idea of the local air activity.

However, a Buk launcher can also operate in stand-alone mode. Its built-in radar is normally used to track the target being engaged, but can be operated in a target-detection mode, allowing it to autonomously engage targets that were present in the radar's forward field of view.

Although it has it own Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) system, this is only able to establish whether the target being tracked is a friendly aircraft. It is the electronic equivalent of a sentry calling out "Who goes there?” If there is no reply, all you know is that it is not one of your own side's combat aircraft. It would not give you a warning that you were tracking an airliner.

Operating Buk hardware would require a trained crew - personnel who are currently trained operators, or who learned how to operate the hardware while serving as conscripts

Perhaps so for the governments of both countries - but what safeguards do they have for ''rebels" or other non governmental combatants??

I'm watching CBS news tonight and this topic was brought up. The reporter said the US government issued an order for all American flights to avoid that area. However, that order is not binding on other airlines or countries. As to WHY these planes choose this hazardous flight plan, the only conclusion made by the reporter is that some governments considered it safe.

Thankfully, all countries are now avoiding that air space.

'It looks like it may be a terrible tragedy': Obama goes AWOL again with just 40-second mention of Malaysian plane crash feared to have killed Americans before his jokey 16-minute transport speech

  • Malaysian Airlines Flight 17 crashed in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, killing all 295 passengers on board
  • President Obama said his national security team is working on identifying the U.S. citizens – and then launched into jokes and 16 minutes of prepared remarks
  • Twitter erupted with digital eye-rolls at Obama's curt mention of the 'tragedy' that the Ukrainian government quickly called a 'criminal case'
  • House Speaker John Boehner offered a solemn statement, saying 'many innocents were killed today. It is horrifying.'

With the plane falling on what is said to be enemy territory, you have to wonder what will happen to the plane's black box - if the rebels get their hands on it they will likely hide it and keep investigators from finding out more info about the cause of the tragedy. Let's hope this box can be found and soon.

GRABOVO, Ukraine - Malaysia Airlines says at least one Canadian was on board Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, reportedly shot down Thursday over a town in the east of Ukraine. Malaysia’s prime minister hasn’t confirmed the crash was an attack, but said no distress call was made and the flight route had been declared safe by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

The box is on it\s way to Moscow. That's important because it means well get the truth. The management of this conflict on one side a sloppy brutal mess pushed to the attack by the ruined west and the side just waiting patiently, ignoring provocation, until the slim western credibility is exhausted and the proles are in full riot, because they know the east has already won. The west has been BRICed to the head. Business and wealth defections to Eastasia are up doubleplusgoodly. I hope the death toll won't be so bad but,,, when was the last time the planet changed hands, WW2 maybe, that was a lot of people. I think the Aliens who visit got rid of money before they experienced the great leap of progress between planets.
