For years, the crazed eyes of a mass killer were drilled into our collective consciousness.

Cold, unfeeling, fanatical, terrifying.

In short, terror master Osama bin Laden was, as the title of a BBC documentary suggested, the very essence of the Power of Nightmares.

For nearly two decades, the world’s intelligence services and special operations hunted him down like the dog he was. To no avail.

But on May 2, 2011, in a well-guarded compound in Abbottabad in northern Pakistan, near the Afghanistan border, bin Laden was finally taken off the board.

All that remains of the terror master’s lair is rubble where he hid for five years.

“It was a very bad thing for this place and for the whole country,” retired teacher Altaf Hussain told AFP. “By living here, Osama gave this city a bad reputation.”

The dilettante of death was dispatched courtesy of U.S. Navy SEAL Team 6 with a lot of grunt work from the CIA.

“Tonight, I can report to the American people and to the world that the United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda, and a terrorist who’s responsible for the murder of thousands of innocent men, women, and children … ,” U.S. President Barack Obama told the world late that evening.

It was nearly 10 years after the horrific attacks on 9/11 when America — and the world — were shocked and appalled at the death cult’s brazen slaughter.

Attacks in New York City brought down the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, more death followed in a field in Pennsylvania and at the Pentagon in Washington.

And the aftershocks of that bright September day continue to reverberate throughout the U.S., the Middle East and the rest of the planet.

Bloody wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, battles won but the war appears to be far from over, although al Qaeda is a shadow of its former self.

Instead, it has been usurped by the crazed fanatics of Islamic State.

And while many on the Muslim street initially saw bin Laden as a sort of flowery-tongued saviour against American imperialism, others soon saw a monster.

“Before, I remember that people named their children Osama, even in my village,” said Pakistani journalist Rahimullah Yusufzai told AFP.

Time has changed his reputation. Instead of a liberator, he’s now known as the man who launched hellfire on millions of innocent Muslims.

The last journalist to interview bin Laden, Hamid Mir, said the starry-eyed Saudi rich kid is now seen as an abomination.

“A bad person who killed innocent people and caused destruction — not only in Pakistan, but in many countries, in violation of the teachings of Islam,” Mir said.
