Rev,they killed college students at Kent State[unarmed].So,who wouldn't they shoot? Perhaps New Orleans should not be rebuilt. Odds are that more storms of this ferocity are heading that way in the near future, and it would be more cost effective to just relocate all the surviving population. If the Democrats don't seize this opportunity to bash the Powers That be,there is no hope of any democracy in the USA :)

RE: Officials throw up ha

Not rebuilding is not an option...that would be political suicide, especially since the power of Katrina is being linked to global warming.

I suspect there will be Netherlands-style flood protection put in place now. It will be touted as American innovation even though it has existed for a long time elsewhere.

The rebuilding will concentrate on making New Orleans a nice place for rich people to live...don't count on a lot of the poor moving back there. It will also kick-start the flailing US economy, again helping the rich and not the poor.

RE: Officials throw up ha

Not just Bush. So many articles and reports are saying that this points out the dirty underbelly of US-style capitalism that it's bound to have an effect on the globalisation boys.

Previously this sort of thing has only happened in developing countries. We were told that the devastation was caused by poverty and the poverty was because they wouldn't fully adopt the policies of IMF and World Bank.

In New Orleans and the rest of the south, the devastation clearly affected the poor disproportionately. The numbers of poor are clearly massive. The poor were left behind while the rich got to safety. The social problems caused by unfettered capitalism have been highlighted.

For this to happen in the richest country in the world shows that the policies that country has been following not only don't work, but are extremely harmful to a large part of the population. There are going to be a lot more people pushing for systemic changes to the global economy and the usual pat answers of the far right are going to sound even more like lies now that the world has seen where the present system leads.
