People are willing to pay for action on climate change.
No, morons are willing to pay for ideology and corruption. The windmills, the FIT system, smart meters, none of them did f*ck all to reduce GHG emissions but they sure did needlessly add to the cost of electricity.
Some costs were sensible, like the refurbishment of nuclear reactors and increasing the generating power at Niagara Falls. Others, not so much. Like needing natgas power to backup the green crap. Besides the fact that it's a fossil fuel, natgas fracking permanently removes fresh water from the system. And by permanently, I mean relative to our existence.
The fact is, Ontario's green energy plan was NOT and is not very green at all.

He loves the Nazis, too.
Nah, he just hates Canada and Canadians.

The hard truths behind Ontario’s pricey electrical system

While the headline numbers in Bonnie Lysyk’s report are indeed shocking—between 2006 and 2014 Ontario consumers and small businesses made $37 billion in “excess payments” to electricity generators above the market price for electricity, the report said—experts say it’s misleading to imply consumers didn’t receive anything in return.http://www.macleans.ca/economy/the-hard-truths-behind-ontarios-pricey-electrical-system/

LOL Usually when you pay more than market price, its called being ripped off.

The rest of the article is fluff implying that it is a good thing to be relying on those windmills which are so great we have to subsidize them.

And we are doing that so we can sell excess power to neighbours at pennies on the dollar. If there is so much supply, how come the price is so high?

How else did you expect the Liberal traitors to attract private investors for Hydro One? Ok, in all fairness the power that gets exported doesn't come with all the charges and taxes that we pay so that the jurisdiction that purchases it can add their own taxes and whatever other associated costs to their bills.
What really honks me off is when we pay Hydro Quebec 2.5 cents/kwh to take excess off our hands, who then turns around and sells it for 5 cents/kwh.
Why are the Liberals subsidizing Hydro Quebec while selling off 60% of our own public utility?
