Jason has been working hard to take away the rights of visible minority Canadian citizens. He is getting rid of a fairer way to process new Canadians where everyone has an equal chance and he is working harder to make it easier to strip Canadian citizenship from people that fall on hard times. We got to be thankful that our Conservative government is not a fascist one even though some of the laws they want to bring in is.

No one is taking away rights of visible minorities. The immigration process is a screwed up Liberal system, it needs to be fixed. The backlog created by the Libs have to be eliminated and we need a better system to select the right immigrants for our country. Canada is not for everyone.

If your so concerned about the visible minorities, maybe you should be more concerned as to why they are not joining our military, for instance, and carrying their fair of the heavy lifting in keeping Canada strong and free. I do a lot of fund raising thru walks/runs, I see very few south Asians in these walks/runs doing their part to raise funds, but I see a lot of them whenever I visit a hospital or medical clinic. Everybody should be carrying their fair share.

Obviously there couldn't have been Canadian citizens before Canada existed, but the point is that prior to 1947 the phrase "Canadian citizen" had no legal meaning. Kenney is, as TenPenny said, technically correct, before the Canadian Citizenship Act was passed in 1947 Canadians were legally considered to be British nationals resident in Canada. You'll have to read that statute and its associated regulations to answer your questions, and so should everyone else here before calling Kenney names. And to really understand the situation, there are three other statutes to dip into: Immigration Act of 1910, Naturalization Act of 1912, and the Canadian Nationals Act of 1921.

The premise of the thread seems to be unnecessary. Kenney is an idiot and a vile, evol man.

However, the topic is different and it is an affront to Canada and to democracy to take the new stand. The current Citizenship Act was 1977, btw. That does not seem to have been mentioned. It was an Act of Trudeau and one of his finest achievements. Amongst other features that removed discrimination and made possible what Kenney is trying to kill, it advanced women's Rights to a point that other countries followed.

The one thing about it that was discreditable is that it retroactively disenfranchised many hundreds of thousands of landed immigrants who had the Right to vote previously, and many exercised it. That is illegal and I am always surprised that it has not been tested in Court.

However, on balance it was an excellent Act advancing Canada's nationhood and introducing am element of fairness and compassion that had not neen there before.

That is what Kenney is trying to destroy. Or rather Harper is. Kenney could not do this except under instruction. It is too big. Harper, apparently, has decided that he can do without certain immigrant votes next time.

Never hurts to double check. The gfood news is, if you have no other citizenship, the government might have no where else to send you but to one of those detention centres where you have no medical care. But at least you'll still be in Canada.

Just don't get any foreign citizenship until you've checked though or then you could get deported there.

O, and by the way, does that mean you're also a British citizen? Better check or you could be sent off to the UK all of a sudden.

Kenny is an Asshole but he is fixing many of the gross disasters that Turdo and company made in their haste to destroy Canada. This is just one of many laws that needs a complete rewrite.
