This is the first page of an article from the New York Times on the arrest of IMF Chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn, a central figure in world finance and the leading candidate for the election of the President of France next year.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the leader of the International Monetary Fund, was ordered on Monday to be held without bail over allegations that he had sexually assaulted a maid in a $3,000-a-night suite at a Midtown hotel.

Dominique Strauss-Kahn waited to be arraigned in Manhattan Criminal Court on Monday.

Prosecutors had asked the judge, Melissa C. Jackson, supervising judge of Manhattan Criminal Court, to remand Mr. Strauss-Kahn, 62, contending that he was a flight risk. They also indicated that a similar attack may have occurred.

“Some of this information include reports that he has in fact engaged in conduct similar to the conduct alleged in this complaint on at least one other occasion,” said John McConnell, an assistant district attorney, adding that the district attorney’s office was still investigating the other occasion, which occurred outside the United States. In opposing bail, prosecutors highlighted the serious nature of the allegations.

“The defendant restrained a hotel employee inside of his room,” Mr. McConnell said. “He sexually assaulted her and attempted to forcibly rape her,” and when that failed, he forced her to perform oral sex..

Mr. McConnell also said that he saw video of Mr. Strauss-Kahn leaving the Sofitel New York after the alleged attack.
“He appears to be a man who was in a hurry,” Mr. McConnell said.

The criminal complaint says that Mr. Strauss-Kahn shut the door and prevented the woman from leaving, grabbing her breasts, attempting to pull down her pantyhose, grabbing her crotch and forcing her to perform oral sex.
Benjamin Brafman, one of Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s lawyers, argued that “there is a very, very defensible case and he should be entitled to bail,” asking that his client be allowed to post $1 million bail. He said his wife would provide the money. She was scheduled to arrive in New York from Paris at 1 p.m., Mr. Brafman said.

He added that his client was not trying to flee when he was arrested on an Air France plane that was about to take off from Kennedy International Airport on Saturday.

Mr. Brafman said that Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s travel plans had been set for some time, and he indicated that there was evidence that between the time of the alleged attack and his flight, Mr. Strauss-Kahn was in the area, taking care of other business.
He also said that his client had a lunch meeting in the area of the hotel and that his lunch partner would be able to testify. In addition, he said, the hotel security found out he was at the airport only after they called him and he told them where he was.

“That’s not consistent with someone who’s trying to conceal his whereabouts, and get on a flight and leave,” Mr. Brafman said.
But prosecutors said that Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s resources, the lack of an extradition treaty between the United States and France and the defendant’s history were all reasons that he should not be granted bail.

Indeed, Judge Jackson, before ordering remand, indicated that she was concerned about Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s needing to be stopped at the airport.
“When I hear that your client was at J.F.K. Airport about to board a flight, that raises some concern,” she said.
Mr. Strauss-Kahn has been charged with various counts of sexual assault including attempted rape, sexual abuse and criminal sexual act. He faces up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
After Judge Jackson announced that Mr. Strauss-Kahn would be held without bail, Mr. Brafman asked if she would be amenable to changing her decision if he were able to strike a deal with the Manhattan district attorney’s office in which his client would wear an ankle monitor. Judge Jackson indicated that she would not change her ruling, meaning that Mr. Brafman may have to make a bail appeal to the appellate court.

Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s appearance in Manhattan Criminal Court, which lasted only 26 minutes, capped a 43-hour odyssey through New York’s criminal system. He was arrested, held in a special cell in East Harlem, placed in a police lineup, and submitted to a forensic medical exam for possible evidence. He even was subjected to a ritual familiar to high-profile suspects: the so-called perp walk, providing newspapers around the world with a front-page picture of Mr. Strauss-Kahn being led away from a police station in handcuffs.

To me, and of course these are ALLEGATIONS.. but if proven true, they simply show me what i've noted in other posts. That the IMF, with the other witches surrounding the cauldron of the Global Economic Paradigm, the WTO and the World Bank.. is so jaded and corrupt that it inevitably draws these debauched old men, scions of privilege, to their leadership.

He was staying in a $3,000 a night hotel room at a time when his dictates are forcing a vicious austerity on Greece, Portugal and other countries... impoverishing 10s of millions.

This is not an isolated event, it is a sign of a systemic corrosion of the moral structures of these Supra-national institutions that have usurped political power from sovereign nations. It is a manifestation of the type of predatory and licentious attitude that exists in these places.

It's only a short step from pillaging the resources of small countries in the interests of a Global Investment organism, and grabbing the hair of chambermaid in your hotel and forcing her to perform oral sex on you. It's all part of the same mind frame that you are above the law, and bear no responsibility except to your own gratification. That IS the mantra of the Free Market.

And it was IMF, who Harper, in the Debates before the election proudly pronounced had 'APPROVED' our national budget, as meeting its 'standards' for good economic management.

Nothing to do with IMF policy. Think Russell Williams vs. DND policy.

Though it is ironic that the leader of the French Socialist Party should be staying in a 300.00/night hotel. One would have thought he'd have believed in somewhat humbler accommodation?

I read it was $3,000/night room, around here that would get you a room, drinks for the night and a couple of Escorts. So far I'm impressed that NY Cops yarded him off a flight that was ready for departure. The no bail is also impressive, might have made better TV if he was granted bail and then sic the Dawg after him.
I'm going to have to assume the maid is now 'in retirement mode'. I hope she takes the low-key approach, one story for major bucks, the rest that come forward can to the talk-show circuit.
If he is that rich and that cheap (not to hire somebody) then his business dealings might show the same trend. I am assuming the maid is a woman (got the identity) rather than it being 'assumed' a maid is a woman, ie employee could be a bellboy. . Maids don't clean up until after the guest has left. Just sayin, ........

Silly me. Google has an answer to so many questions.

Anyway, it's been confirmed by the media that the maid was definitely female. At least DSK has that on his side.

Also, there is growing debate in France as to whether it is a set up, seeing that he was expected to run for the French presidency. Somehow I doubt it was a set up seeing that few humans would be willing to stoop so low as to ruin a person's reputation like that just for political gain. That said, he is innocent until proven guilty and time will tell.

It's looking bad for him so far though. The maid did suffer minor injuries and and claims of previous similar conduct are emerging. Still innocent until proven guilty of course and I hope for his sake that he is innocent.

And it looks like another woman will make a criminal complaint for a previous assault. Ouch! I doubt very much it's a conspiracy.

Blow jobs and cocaine have long been the #1 way to kill a political career or someone gaining notoriety in way that isn't positive for the Enterprise.

The 'Seduction' Myth: What the French Still Don't Get About Sex

Dominique Strauss-Kahn has not been convicted of any crime. Neither would it be appropriate to indict French society — the pervasive sexism parading as a celebration of "difference," the self-indulgence of the "caviar left," of which he is a prime exemplar — for his (alleged) behavior. To do so, after all, would be to fall into the same facile trap as the various French commentators who, in the days since the International Monetary Fund chief's arrest in New York City for sexual assault and attempted rape, have fallen all over the case as an example of American sensationalism and, of course, classic "Puritanism."

Are you completely daft man? Why would you hope a guy who looks to have a record of sexual assault and abuse is innocent?

For my sake I hope they decide to add on a bunch of charges relating to the IMF f*cking the world economy for private profit of the oligarchy. A firing squad would be too good for this moron and all his corporate globalist cohorts. I would sentence him to life of abject poverty and homelessness for his crimes against hard-working people on this planet.

Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney is being named to the short list of possible successors for Strauss-Kahn's position. I think I read the other day that a Turkish banker is leading the pack.

Although there is much push from emerging economic countries the traditional reasoning is that the MD of the World Bank is American and the MD of the IMF is European, usually French or German. I have see some reports of people starting to rally against this but we will see when the short list is published June 10th.

Because if he's innocent:

1. It means he is spared punishment and humiliation,
2. His family is spared humiliation, and
3. the maid never suffered sexual assault.

Clearly to say that I hope he's not innocent would logically be to say that I hope that:

1. the maid suffered assault,
2. DSK be punished and humiliated, or
3. his family be humiliated.

Now of course I can say that for the maid's sake I hope she's telling the truth so as to not have her charged with making false criminal claims and have her name and reputation dragged through the mud. Yet to any logical person, there is no contradiction to say that for his sake I hope he's innocent and that for her sake I hope she's telling the truth. Ideally, both would be true in that the whole thing would have arisen over a misunderstanding. The way things are looking though, that's not the case and it's looking more by the day that he is guilty. However, logically, should he be guilty, that means she suffered assault.

What person with a heart would hope he's guilty (i.e., that he in fact assaulted her)?

Unfortunately in your first post you only mentioned him and therefore came across like you were supporting him.
What person with a heart would hope he's guilty (i.e., that he in fact assaulted her)?
Then maybe a better statement would have been 'for her sake I hope he's innocent' otherwise the impression is you only care about him. Now I will admit I have bigger issues with the guy than just this incedent and I may let that cloud my judgement so its a good thing I will not form part of his jury.
