We're very much the same, missle - it will be 5 years for me in October.
One nice thing is that its quite rare when you find yourself doing something that you simply don't FEEL like doing - oh, it still happens once in a while, but not very much.

One thing I don't get to do enough is get out with the wife, the cat, and our 5th wheel - she still works, dammit!

Ten packs,
If you missed that post, someone who lived in Port Hardy knew your friend dave mackenzine, he still lives in coal harbour, you should have no problem getting his phone number from information.

I would buy some land on Quadra island, and grow organic vegetables to sell, maybe to those suffies that live over there. I would become a quadralite instead of just a visitor. This would allow me my own chair at the HBI (harriet bay inn) like all the other quadralites, I could fall out of bed every morning and kayak on over to starbucks...ehm there is no starbucks on quadra island..not allowed...just the gumboot cafe that offer up really "big fish" tales.

Sounds good to me. I'm taking early retirement myself, in another 65 days. I'm tired of working for The Man, and tired of being responsible for other people's work. If I could do what I do without having to supervise people, or take directions from idiots, I'd keep on doing it. But I can't, so I'm bailing out.

First, I'll spend six months, or twelve, or whatever it takes, recovering my sleep deficit. Then I've got about two years worth of projects to do around the house and yard, which I could probably extend to five years if I don't work too hard. And if I get bored I'll lend my muscles, but not my brains, to Habitat for Humanity. I'd rather be outside swinging a hammer than inside fiddling with computer systems and networks. I've had enough of that.

Or maybe I'll just work on getting my post count here up to 10,000.

65 days? Man, I'll bet you spend a good chunk of every day staring at the calendar.

If you run out of projects let me know, Dexter... have a few things around here that I never seem to get to. ;-)

No, just an hour or two...

Sure thing, I like to visit Winnipeg, and it's a lovely drive from Regina on Number 1 in the summertime. What do you need, a deck built, a bathroom renovated, some extra electrical outlets, painting, wallpapering, some landscaping, a new garage...? I do it all. And for people I like (and I'm sure you'd fall into that group if I met you) I work for the cost of materials plus some good beer and good conversation at the end of the day.

RE: If you didn't have to

Isn't that trip down the Number 1 just about as much fun as you can have in an automobile? 6-1/2 hours of wondering why the hell you didn't just stay home. I don't know who decided where the Trans-Canada should go, but I have yet to see a stretch of it that wasn't the most boring route available.

I know how that working for beer thing works out though, Dexter. It's generally cheaper to get three bids and pay the highest one. ;-)

I think this summer is going to be landscaping though. I desperately need dump about 40 yards of fresh topsoil on my garden. The garage still needs a roof too, but I'm trying to decide if I shouldn't just replace the garage. Lemmee see, what else? I need to rip the back step out and build a deck there, but I'd like to put an addition on so maybe....

Ah hell, just stop by. We'll skip the projects and sit in the backyard and drink beer.

Yes, in a moving automobile... Actually there's about 20 kilometers or so where the scenery's not bad, as you pass through the old shorelines of the glacial lakes that used to cover most of Manitoba. Most of the time though, it's about as exciting as watching grain grow. Which, come to think of it, is about all there is to see on that trip.

That's a much better idea. I'm sure you'll enjoy this discussion of the matter on another message board:

RE: If you didn't have to

I always think the best scenery is the big elevator at Indian Head...when I see that I know I'll be having a beer in twenty minutes or so.

The best trip we ever took back to Saskatchewan took two days, including an overnight stop in a farmer's field. We took gravel roads almost all the way and stopped every hour or two to let the dogs run.

The worst was in a 1 ton Ford flatbed with an empty water tank behind. Every bump in the road caused a huge echoing clang, we had to stop for oil 3 times (bit of an engine problem) between Moosemin and Winnipeg, and it poured the entire way.
