Hells Angel escapes from Quebec prison
LAVAL, Que. - A notorious murderer and former Hells Angels member escaped Saturday night from a minimum-security federal prison north of Montreal, police said.
Rene Charlebois, 48, who was reportedly close with incarcerated former Hells leader Maurice "Mom" Boucher, escaped around 10:45 p.m. from the Montee Saint-Francois prison in Laval, Que.
Charlebois pleaded guilty in 2004 to murdering Claude DeSerre, a Hells member-turned police informant. DeSerre's body was found in February 2000 about 70 km north of Montreal. DeSerre was tied-up in a chalet and shot in the head.
When police found his body they discovered the audio recording device they gave DeSerre recorded the last moments of his death, including the voice of his murderer.
Charlebois was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 10 years. Charlebois had been in prison since 2001 and was available for parole beginning in 2011.
Quebec prison authorities told QMI Agency inmates are often transferred to minimum-security prisons to serve out the remainder of their sentence.
The Surete du Québec issued a warrant for Charlebois' arrest. He is described at five-feet, eight-inches tall and 206 lb. He has brown hair and brown eyes. The fugitive also has the name "Rene" tattooed on his left arm.
The Correctional Service of Canada will open an investigation to try to determine how Charlebois escaped.
Less than a year ago, another Saint-Francois inmate escaped. Prisoner Gilles Meloche told QMI Agency that all he had to do to leave the prison was "push the door." Meloche was caught and re-arrested shortly after his escape.
