Toronto does not even have the cash to either repair or remove the Gardner much less do all the other transit deal quietly being listed by anti car liars and `gated community` lovers at Silly Hall in order to avoid traffic chaos!
Jackass John the Sorry Tory- who happens to be desperately seeking a “legacy” project that he can slap his name on before he gets shoved out of office in disgrace - is in favour of replacing the eastern Gardiner/Lakeshore blvd with an 8 lane semi expressway at ground level.....and he expects no effect on traffic? Oh sure.....remove the current roughly 12 lanes-6 on Gardiner and 6 more on Lakeshore.....and REPLACE them with 8 lanes- it`s a 1/3 REDUCTION in carrying capacity along with lower speed limits and increased interference from traffic lights and Jackass thinks traffic will still run as before? HAHAHAHA!!!! This is the sort of thinking that prevented Jackass John from winning a seat at Queens Park as leader of the Red Tory Party!
Somebody really should take Jackass John the Sorry Tory mayor of Toronto in hand....along with his sycophantic squadron of socialist silly hall nitwits and explain in detail what a colossal MESS will be made in the southern half of Toronto if the Gardner Expressway decays to the point where it has to be closed due to becoming unstable and unsafe while council dithers.
Silly Hall Hogs enjoy travelling on the public dime so maybe we should ship them to Montreal to see what people there think of having two of the 4 lanes on the major commuter route across Champlain Bridge shut down due to safety concerns because Montreal has done the fine job on their infrastructure as Toronto has!
Firstly, if Gardner is suddenly closed, all those cars currently funneling down the Don Valley Expressway will have no place to go-they will despair of trying to squeeze onto the already jammed Lakeshore Blvd and they will start barreling through residential streets looking for ways around the mess....just what you want....noise and pollution and roaring engines zooming through your neighbourhood...scaring your kid and killing your cat or anything else that is careless of the traffic. And give a little thought to all the condos being built down town......all of them need food and clothing and other things.....how will these things be delivered if the Gardiner is ripped down as some councillors want; or even if the available road lanes are reduced by one third as Jackass John proposes? Think of the costly delays, extra pollution from idling engines and soaring prices from such obstructions!
And there are also those masses of cars coming in from the west to consider- all suddenly directed off the elevated and corroding Gardner with the same result-jammed local streets with curb to curb road rage in the west end to match the east!
And don’t expect the enraged drivers to suddenly turn to TTC-the BITTER way-so named for its rotten, slow and unreliable service-the bitter way is already overwhelmed by the number of people trying to get downtown....with no way to even BEGIN to build a relief line for 5-10 YEARS! And TTC is totally LACKING the resources to handle a sudden influx of new passengers- meaning EVEN MORE commuter chaos!
But the REAL issue with Gardner is this: if its not safe to drive on then it will quickly become unsafe to drive UNDER IT either. Big chunks of Lakeshore Blvd run under the east and middle portions of Gardner-these will need to be closed if/when Gardner becomes dangerously corroded.....imagine THAT traffic mess! No Gardner and suddenly no Lakeshore either! Ask yourself how long it will take for dead broke Silly Hall to come up with the cash needed for a major operation such as taking the Gardner down? And how much colossal traffic mess for miles will be created along the Lakeshore REGARDLESS of whether they tear down or go for the Jackass John sponsored one third REDUCTION idea? And for how many months....or years to get it done?
And we are not finished......Union Station lies north of Gardner so it (and the subway) will remain accessible......but east-bound Go tracks run UNDER portions of Gardner....will the eastern GO be closed as well to avoid having passenger trains bombed with Gardiner concrete? Very likely!!!! Picture a 50 pound chunk of concrete coming through a train roof- that WILL be a great excuse NOT to get on rthe Go! And....as I recall, Go tracks ALSO run under portions of Gardner in the CNE grounds area .....so...we look at potentially a SUDDEN and TOTAL shut down of ALL Go transit into Union Station till Jackass John and his dead broke socialist swine figure out how to respond to the `emergency`....which they have been very carefully engineering for DECADES with their War On Cars....or anything else on wheels that cannot use a bike lane!
Then there are all those posh condo owners along Queens Quay....can you hear the screaming if they are suddenly told that the only way in or out of Queens Quay is by boat to Bluffers Park because access to their homes from Cherry, Sherburne, Parliament, Jarvis, Young, York and Bay is now blocked by falling concrete? And all the people wanting to go to Toronto Islands on a nice summer day suddenly cannot get to the ferry dock until hapless and helpless Silly Hall has to figure out how to create safe access under Gardner....how long would it take and who would pay for such?
I admit that these examples cited are worst case scenes but since when has Silly Hall done anything till their feet were in the fire? Want to bet the looming disasters get REAL CLOSE before the Hogs even begin to talk the problem to death? And when has Silly Hall ever done the right thing in a timely way? Will they wait till a pedestrian is killed by falling concrete? Or will they wait till a car falls into a collapsing Gardner span?
We are told that Gardner could be torn down at a cost of half a billion dollars......want to BET on that? Given the VAST cost over-runs on everything else socialist Silly Hall has touched in recent years the real cost of destroying Gardner is easily over a Billion Dollars! And this does not touch on the traffic chaos and road rage that will ensue if Silly Hall goes ahead with demolition plans.
Repairing Gardiner will also cost over a billion dollars but at least Gardiner (and Lakeshore) will be kept more or less open during repairs-thus somewhat limiting traffic chaos and reducing the chance of some utterly enraged driver running down any city staffer who steps in front of their bumper!
And the other crap about tearing down Gardiner and building something underground-50 ft from a major lake? HAHAHAHA......perhaps most of the workers will be working in scuba gear! And we have only to look at the COST!!! Go to Boston and ask them about their `Big Dig` experience-they had their own version of Gardner standing near the ocean and they did the `lets tear it down and bury it` deal....at a final cost of over 12 billion dollars (U.S.) And that was in 2007 dollars-factor in inflation and the Toronto City Hall stupidity fees and the cost of ripping down and burying Gardner reaches about TWENTY BILLION DOLLARS....so that ain’t happening.
Toronto is looking at then add about 13 billion dollars (and climbing) for repairing Metro Toronto Housing crack houses and flea palaces so they wont be completely condemned and become utterly unlivable, with aged, sick and poverty stricken tenants suddenly forced out onto the cold mean streets-and Jackass John gets a fair share of blame for that as he has just signed off on massive `bonuses for the Housing `Mis`management senior staff. Toronto is also currently on the hook for sudden new expenses for tending to the illegals that are flooding into our proud Toronto “Sanctuary City” -with no sanctuary available as homeless shelters are FULL and the city has run out of vacant buildings to dump the illegals into. The illegals COULD be housed at buildings on CNE Exhibition grounds but activists SCORN that idea due to lack of access to jobs, transit and limited panhandling opportunities! And thus far Our idiot Boy Justin has demonstrated he is more interested in condemning people who think he is nut for collecting illegals as if he were a crazy cat lady rounding up strays- than he is in PAYING for the fabulous mess he is creating!
This is the face of bankruptcy children.....no new subways, no new Smart Track garbage, no grand new boulevard in Toronto east end, no magic pot of money at the end of the federal or provincial rainbow either! All that can be done in a sensible way is REPAIR Gardiner....anything else is costly crap!
