good times

The trial of disgraced CBC Radio host Jian Ghomeshi gets underway next week in Toronto. Here’s what we know about the judge, the Crown prosecutor and Ghomeshi’s defence lawyer:

Ontario Court judge William Horkins

The judge presiding over one of the year’s most high-profile criminal trials is no stranger to hot-button issues.

Three years ago, Ontario judge William Horkins ruled that police street checks — also known as carding — were unconstitutional, a debate that carries on among many police forces to this day.

He nonetheless allowed the gun found during a carding stop to be entered as evidence and found the accused guilty of unauthorized possession of an unauthorized firearm.

Horkins was called to the bar in 1980 and served as both a Crown attorney and a defence lawyer before he was appointed to the bench in 1998.

Jian Ghomeshi's trial: The key players
This man should have been smart enough to know that your cannot have your cake and eat it too. He could not date nice girls, then punch their lights out, what the hell was wrong with him. He should have join an S & M club and brutalize and get brutalize by someone who enjoyed it.

Who cares about emails, if there were 1 or 2 victims, maybe!! but the number of people coming forward saying this guy assaulted them nails the coffin shut. Same for Cosby; way too many victims.

There is a percentage of Cosby's accusers who are clearly in it for the money.

As far as Ghomeshi goes, please due process for everyone, otherwise we might find ourselves without a defense when falsely accused.

Day 4

During the trial - this.

"During a dramatic cross-examination, intimate emails and one “love letter” Lucy DeCoutere sent Ghomeshi after the alleged assault were read to the court.

After the trial - this.

Her lawyer says “she wants survivors of violence to know that what they do in the aftermath in no way changes the truth.”

The Jian Ghomeshi Trial - Chatelaine

I'm having a really hard time trying to understand just what the prosecution's strategy is - or if they even have one. Two witnesses now who though allegedly suffering terribly at the hands of this man chose to keep in touch with him. This latest witness's love letter has me wondering just what is the 'truth'.

You have to admire the bravery of the women that are standing up to Ghomeshi. Their reputations are being trashed in public so that their value as witnesses is lessened or destroyed. Lawyers can be really nasty.

Before the trial the prosecution only had 'prepared statements' from witnesses. In a trial you get to hear all the other parts that were neglected to be brought forward. I suspect if the prosecution had all the info they had now, they may not have been so eager to press charges.

If I was to bet (and I never would), I would bet on acquittal.

Sounds like this latest one has done it to herself. If she told him she wanted to F his brains out the day after he beat on her..

She stuck it out and pressed charges. There is a very slick professional attourney trying to make you think exactly that.

Anyway, the Crown will have their chance, too and the whole thing will swing the other way.

These were the crown witnesses were they not? Usually crown witnesses are first then defense last.

A few years ago, a neighbour of ours was involved in an abusive relationship. It boiled over in front of my youngest, who took it upon himself to stop it. He ended up damaging the guys truck.

The woman made it quite clear that despite having been slapped around that she still loved the man, and that he was only a problem when he drank and she didn't give him the space he needed.

And that's but one of my experiences with women who stay with or defend, or try to please an abusive partner.

DeCoutere's actions don't surprise me in the least.

Man with power tool arrested outside Ghomeshi trial
By Maryam Shah, Toronto Sun
First posted: Friday, February 05, 2016 01:36 PM EST | Updated: Friday, February 05, 2016 02:19 PM EST
TORONTO - Reporters waiting to cover the Jian Ghomeshi trial ended up tackling a man who was allegedly waving around a power tool and claimed to have a gun.
The incident happened early Friday morning as members of the media waited for Old City Hall to open.
According to Toronto Police, a young man with a power tool was “screaming” about the court system and being “verbally and physically assaultive” to media gathered outside the Queen-Bay Sts. courthouse around 7 a.m.
“He was also indicating that he has some sort of weapon,” said Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu. “He ends up pulling what appears to be a saw out of his bag.”
A journalist and cameraman held down the “irate” teen for police.
“He starts spitting at them, assaulting them, then he indicates he has a revolver,” Sidhu said. “However, no gun is seen.”
Tweets from journalists at the scene indicate Global News reporter Adam Miller tackled the teen.
“Man of action @adamsmiller tackled threatening teen outside of court while waiting for #Ghomeshi Adam, you are amazing!!” tweeted Global News reporter Christina Stevens.
A 19-year-old man was taken into custody at 52 Division. There was no information on any charges.
“What he actually had on him after he was arrested was a skil saw with no blade,” Sidhu explained. “But that was all discovered after the fact.”
For someone to be that verbally and physically threatening is quite unusual, she added. There was no connection to the much-publicized trial happening inside the courthouse.
“He was irate about judges and the court, is what he was screaming about,” Sidhu said, adding there was no mention of Ghomeshi.
The former CBC host later arrived for court without incident.

Having once been in an abusive relationship myself, I do understand why some women will stay with their partners, Bear. However, DeCoutere was not in a long-term relationship with Ghomeshi - she dated him once. The very fact that she did not disclose the damaging emails or the love letter does not speak well for her credibility, IMHO.

I am no fan of this creep and would like nothing better than to see him convicted if he is guilty. So far, his guilt of innocence is still up in the air as far as I am concerned.

I see where you're coming from. I don't think it has to be a long relationship in the traditional sense.

1, The abused party could have been in the relationship longer than the abuser. That is to say, that they have been admiring from a far for some time.

2, So desperate as to be willing to take it.

Ditto, and fair enough.

Darn it Bear, I hit the wrong button - so sorry for the red - it should have been a thumbs up. My apologies.

I do think that Ghomeshi did what she said - he all ready said that he likes rough sex. So DeCoutere may very well be telling the truth about the abuse. What does not speak well for her is that she chose not to come clean with the information about the emails and the love letter when she had many opportunities to do so. It makes her look like a woman scorned and willing to do anything to get back at the person.

Of course he will. First off will be a book. Eventually, he'll be more successful than before.

If he ever needs to work again! You won't see a conviction now. There's more than reasonable doubt. I still think he's an A$$hole. :) :)
