MIAMI -- An online auction was halted without explanation Thursday for the pistol that former Florida neighbourhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman used to kill unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin.
The weapon was removed from the GunBroker.com website, minutes after the auction was to begin. It was not immediately clear why the website took down the listing. Critics called the planned auction an insensitive move to profit from the slaying.
Zimmerman had told Orlando, Florida, TV station WOFL that the pistol was returned to him by the U.S. Justice Department, which took it after he was acquitted in Martin's 2012 shooting death.
The auction for the 9 mm Kel-Tec PF-9 pistol was to begin at 11 a.m. EDT Thursday and end 24 hours later. The website operators did not immediately respond to phone and email messages seeking comment.
The auction listing had said a portion of the proceeds would go toward fighting what Zimmerman calls violence by the Black Lives Matter movement against law enforcement officers, combatting anti-gun rhetoric of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and ending the career of state attorney Angela Corey, who led Zimmerman's prosecution.
The listing ended with a Latin phrase that translates as "if you want peace, prepare for war."
Zimmerman, now 32, has said he was defending himself when he killed Martin, 17, in a gated community near Orlando. Martin, who lived in Miami with his mother, was visiting his father at the time.
Zimmerman, who identifies as Hispanic, was acquitted in Martin's February 2012 shooting death. The case sparked protests and a national debate about race relations. The Justice Department later decided not to bring a civil rights case against Zimmerman.
Lucy McBath, the mother of another black teenager shot by a white man during an argument at a Jacksonville convenience store in 2012, said the auction reflected a "deplorable lack of value for human life."
"I am deeply disappointed that the man who killed Trayvon Martin is trying to sell the very gun he used to cut that precious life short to raise money," McBath said in a written statement.
The slaying of her son, 17-year-old Jordan Davis, by Michael Dunn drew parallels at the time to the Zimmerman-Martin case. Dunn told police he had felt threatened by Davis. Unlike Zimmerman, Dunn was convicted of murder.
Since Zimmerman was acquitted, he has been charged with assault based on complaints from two girlfriends. Both women later refused to press charges and Zimmerman wasn't prosecuted. His estranged wife, Shellie Zimmerman, also accused him of smashing her iPad during an argument days after she filed divorce papers. No charges were filed because of lack of evidence. They were divorced in January.
Orlando-based attorney Mark O'Mara has previously represented Zimmerman. A receptionist in O'Mara's office said Thursday that he no longer represents Zimmerman and had no comment.
David S. Weinstein, a former state and federal prosecutor, said it appeared Zimmerman is within his rights to sell the gun through the GunBroker website. Although only licensed firearms dealers are permitted to sell guns across state lines, the auction site says it transfers weapons from sellers to buyers through licensed dealers.
Martin's parents both declined to address Zimmerman's actions in statements made through representatives.
Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, said through an attorney that she would rather focus on her work with the Trayvon Martin Foundation than respond to "Zimmerman's actions."
Daryl Parks, whose firm represented the Martin family during the trial, is now chairman of Fulton's foundation. He says Fulton is pushing for policies that protect youth and address gun violence.
Fulton also founded the Circle of Mothers conference, a three-day event to help mothers who have "lost children or family members" to gun violence. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will be the keynote speaker at the event in Fort Lauderdale starting May 20.
In the auction listing, Zimmerman cited strong interest from collectors including "The Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC."
Smithsonian spokesman John Gibbons denied any interest.
"The Smithsonian has never expressed an interest in collecting this firearm and has no intention of collecting or displaying this firearm," Gibbons said.

He shouldn't have been a violent thug, then. He only has himself to blame.

Just quit the cringy liberal victimising of the criminal.

So what are Mr Zimmerman's mistakes? Do they include defending himself from a violent thug?
They include domestic violence (multiple), driving while suspended, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer, fraud and a few others. Which is why I still have no problem believing Georgie boy was the instigator.

We know exactly how much: NOT. Jury/judge said so. Just like OJ Simpson. He is NOT GUILTY. Therefore his degree of guilt is fully known: 0.
That's hilarious. Really. Reverse the situation and Martin would have been found guilty, 100% guaranteed.

Umm. . . because they're a gun trading website doing business, and not interested in being in the middle of a wailstorm?

'Racist McShootface' bids US$65M for gun that killed Trayvon Martin

MIAMI -- Bidding in an online auction for the pistol former neighbourhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman used to kill Trayvon Martin appeared to have been hijacked by fake accounts posting astronomically high bids.
At one point early Friday, the bidding surpassed $65 million with the leading bidder using the screen name "Racist McShootFace." The site later showed that account had been deleted.
The website for United Gun Group began hosting the auction Thursday after another website, GunBroker.com, took down the auction saying it wanted "no part in the listing on our website or in any of the publicity it is receiving."
Hours later, United Gun Group tweeted that it would post Zimmerman's ad. The new link was posted, along with a statement from Zimmerman. The site calls itself a "social market place for the firearms community."
Bidding on the 9 mm Kel-Tec PF-9 pistol began at $5,000.
Critics called the auction an insensitive move to profit from the slaying.
Zimmerman had told Orlando, Florida, TV station WOFL that the pistol was returned to him by the U.S. Justice Department, which took it after he was acquitted in Martin's 2012 shooting death.

Zimmerman closes auction for gun that killed Trayvon Martin, doesn't identify winning bid

MIAMI -- George Zimmerman says he's vetting bids after closing an auction for the pistol he used to kill unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin during an altercation.
The former neighbourhood watch volunteer -- who was acquitted in the 2012 slaying -- says on his blog that the sale was successful, though he gives no details and says the buyer may choose to remain anonymous.
Details of the auction are unclear. The website believed to be the venue, United Gun Group, later said in a tweet that there were two auctions running simultaneously, one for pre-qualifed buyers and a "fake" one for the public. Bids on the fake site visible to the public went as high as US$138,900 before it was deleted about midday Wednesday.
Zimmerman had set the minimum bid at $100,000. Zimmerman had told Orlando, Florida, TV station WOFL that the pistol was returned to him by the U.S. Justice Department, which took it after he was acquitted in Martin's 2012 shooting death.
Critics had called the auction an insensitive move to profit the slaying.

If normal life is a contemptible idiot running around with a loaded gun, claiming to keep his neighbourhood safe by killing a kid with a bag of skittles and a juice box, then yea George should want his normal life returned.

Oh, that's just the start of Georgie's "normal life." Add unemployment, domestic violence, deadbeatism, Dirty Harry fantasizing, and general asswittery, and you've got the sad reality show that's our Georgie.

Gun used to kill Trayvon Martin sold for $250Gs: Report
Karen Brooks, Reuters
First posted: Friday, May 20, 2016 10:22 PM EDT | Updated: Friday, May 20, 2016 10:27 PM EDT
George Zimmerman said he has sold the gun he used to kill unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin in Florida in 2012 for US$250,000, television stations in Orlando and Las Vegas reported on Friday.
Zimmerman could not be reached to verify the reports by KTNV in Las Vegas and WOFL in Orlando.
His offer to sell the Kel-Tec PF9 9mm handgun on UnitedGunGroup.com drew praise from gun rights supporters and scorn from critics who accused him of seeking to profit from the 17-year-old's death.
Online bidding for the gun ended on Wednesday.
Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in the shooting, which sparked heated debates over race relations, gun control and justice in the United States.
In a statement on Twitter after the bidding closed on Wednesday, United Gun Group defended its decision to host the auction and said it would have no further comments.
On his own website that day, Zimmerman said the auction had "raised funds for several worthy causes." He has said he would use proceeds to counter violence against law enforcement officers by the group Black Lives Matter and to fight Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton's "anti-firearm rhetoric."
As of Friday afternoon, he had not posted an update on his website about the sale.
United Gun Group owner Todd Underwood said on his site that tools had been put in place to keep bogus buyers from driving up the price as they had last week, when bids during an initial auction topped $65 million under names such as "Racist McShootFace."
Auction site GunBroker.com rejected the listing last week, and two of America's leading auctioneers of guns said they had refused on ethical grounds to handle the sale.

All things which are likely made up. And the fact in this case, supported by overwhelming evidence, is that Martin attacked Mr Zimmerman. There are even witnesses to say that Martin was on top of Mr Zimmerman laying into him "MMA style." Mr Zimmerman had injuries consistent with his story whilst Martin had no injuries except the fatal gunshot wound.

Mr Zimmerman was attacked by a violent thug who had just bought Skittles and Arizona Fruit Juice, both of which are ingredients in the illegal home-made drug Lean. Mr Zimmerman shot the thug whilst defending himself and all this anti-Mr Zimmerman stuff in the media and online is disgusting, perpetrated by non-entities who have ignored all the facts and evidence to smear an innocent "white" man as some sort of racist. You really need to accept defeat, admit Mr Zimmerman's innocence and move on. And also accept that the vast majority of murdered black folk in America are murdered by other black folk.

In what way is this not his normal life? Let's see. . .

Trailer-park trash. Check.

Loser who can't keep a job. Check.

Spends a lot of time in bars. Check.

Tries to impress people with what a real man he is. Check.

Fails. Check.

Yep, sounds like he already has his normal life back.
