Police have shot and killed a man in the emergency unit of a hospital in Guelph, Ont.
"At approximately 1 p.m. today, Guelph Police Service members were involved in a critical incident. It occurred at the Guelph General Hospital in their emergency unit," said spokesman Const. Mike Gatto.
The officer said he couldn't give out any more information, noting the Special Investigations Unit, Ontario's police watchdog, is investigating.
Two officers discharged their firearms and the man was declared dead at the scene, the SIU said in a release.
A witness told CBC News that she saw a woman running out of the hospital while yelling, "My boyfriend's shooting at me."
"There's blood on the ground," the witness said. "It was freaky."
According to the hospital, the shooting occurred in the waiting room of the emergency department.
"Our [emergency department] remains open, although wait times will be longer than usual," said Marianne Walker, the hospital president and CEO, in a news release. "Our focus now is to provide support to all those who need it, including staff, patients and visitors."
Ten investigators, including four forensic specialists, are investigating the shooting.
The SIU is an arm's-length body that is called in to investigate cases in which a member of the public has sustained severe injuries or died in an interaction with police.

This is the one thing that I do worry about working for my hospital. I work nights so we get some real doozy wackadoodles and I'm sure it's only a matter of time before even our small town ER has someone freak out with a gun.

yeah I heard this on the radio coming home from work yesterday...in Guelph I thought to myself are you kidding me? They shot this dude in the Guelph emerg, that's like getting shot to death in Mayberry for gawd's sake...big stuff must have gone down.

I love Guelph it's practically just down the street. I'm always shocked by gunfire even though it happened in my parking lot last year...it's such a shock when police have to actually draw let alone fire their weapons.

I love my community for exactly that reason.

Northern Ontario,
The last time I saw a police officer draw his service automatic, was about 12 years ago when I went to the O.P.P. station to renew my carry permit (don't have a need for one anymore).
To check my safe use of firearms, the officer unloaded his firearm went to a kind of "safety box", dry fired it in the box to prove it safe,
came back to his desk, and handed it to me, I kept the muzzle in a safe direction and made sure the slide release was in the lock position, grabbed a pencil from his desk and dropped it down the barrel, and turned the pistol so he could see the end of the pencil touching the open slide to prove it safe..
He then took back his firearm, reloaded it, put it back in his holster and signed my application

The news didn't say a reason why they had to shoot the guy.. other than for sh*ts and giggles.
yeah it didn't and I know 90% of the posters in here can't relate and would never understand and that's okay BUT this isn't the west, it isn't the States and it isn't a big city...it's Guelph where when you walk down the street everyone you pass says hello including the cops and they aren't assessing whether or not you are weak enough to "take down".

it's a different world

The west? Explain please.
I find that most in here from the west view guns and gunning people down as their right. Or at least that is how they post. Guns are necessary for self protection. I also remember reading a lot of "cracks" about city folk...which is fine.

But being a city person, and Guelph is a small city, if you asked people in my area if they viewed it that way 98% would not. We do not feel the need to pack guns for protection.

I will be shocked if this kill is not righteous...and I do mean shocked.

I trust that the kill was righteous because i trust the cops in my area. Yes there will be some idiots, but in general they live with their neighbours...gunning someone down for sh*ts and giggles is not what happens where I live.

I do not trust American cops in the same way (I speak now in general)

Sounds like a nice peaceful place. You're fortunate.
it's just pretty middle Canadian...it's how life is in many if not most places here in Canada...your average cop could be your kid and they look you in the eye when they pass you on the street and they smile and say hi...as do most people

and they are college educated...they have to be

How did you come up with that?
from the way people in here post to each other and answer the OP's

pro-gun
pro-cop
pro-white
pro-rich
pro-the right

regardless of the situation

is that incorrect?
