Several decades ago there was a small boy who dreamed of being President and he had
one ambition he would live in Chicago and work tirelessly to "Bankrupt Detriot"
That is the same nonsense that suggests Obama had anything to do with it.
Detriot went bankrupt for a number of reasons. Yes it was the symbol of Ameridan industry.
Yes it was a growing place of opportunity.
Yes the Conservative movement around the world got into the Free Trade business that
destroyed the middle class and destroyed our standard of living and the middle class and yes
we as citizens of North America who wanted cheap running shoes and snow shovels are also
partly to blame.
The fact is Captain Morgan is the most right here, The city council surely saw what was
happening and if they didn't the problem is worse. This city did not re-invest in the city itself
it bloated its services and tried to be all things to all people. It did not invest in its youth it did
not work with industry left in the city to shore up its sagging fortunes and then of course the
biggest problem of all

They did not see that small boy coming to power with a personal vent to bankrupt Detriot.
You know that Obama guy who the mystic right wants to blame for all things terrible.
Detriot did it to themselves people and now the mess has to be cleaned up. It is collective
stupidity nothing to do with left or right. Oh except for that little kid who set out to destroy Detriot

Virtually all of the Free Trade and deregulation legislation was initiated by that idiot Reagan and his allies in Congress like Phil Gramm.

But it really was that deranged maniac Clinton, who put all that on steroids with NAFTA and WTO Agreements and Financial De-regulation in the 1990s. So there is plenty of blame to go around.

Reagan was just a fool in job way too big for his intellect.. but Clinton actually had some cunning.. and sold out to Wall Street.. so he IS more culpable.. he was a hypocrite and corrupt.

The city of Detroit was run into the ground by decades of poor management and a cash grab. Democrats feathering their nests. US Liberalism run amok and totally unchecked.

Now you have this.

Free trade had absolutely nothing to do with it. Mismanagement for decades caused all the problems. Both city management and unions jumped on the gravy train in the fifties and thought it would never run dry. Well it did and now they are in denial. Unfortunately it is the current workforce that will suffer the most.

After the War of 1812, there was some talk in Canada of annexing Detroit after we had laid waste to American forces. At this point, I'm certainly glad we didn't.

Thanks to your attitude the Chinese are buying the whole lot up at pennies on the dollar. And they're dumping their US paper at the same time. I urged an invasion of continental USA some years ago but the government thought Afganistan would be easier pickins. Just the scrap metal alone would have made us all rich.

Yes it was managed by zionist bankers.

That's an idiotic statement.

Detroit reached its population peak in the 1950 census at over 1.8 million people, and decreased in population with each subsequent census; as of the 2010 census, the city has just over 700,000 residents, adding up to a total loss of 61% of the population.. virtually all of that can be assigned to decline of the automobile industry.. to outsourcing to foreign manufacturers and assemblers.

With that decline has been a decline in per capita income.. to what is now the most impoverished taxation base for a major city in the U.S.. Detroit also has one of the largest land areas of any U.S. city... for which they have to provide and maintain infrastructure and basic services. It is roughly the same size as Boston (110 sq. miles) but has a population of .7M to pay for it versus 3.0M for Boston.

There is NO way you can remain solvent in this situation.. no matter how well managed you are.

Not surprisingly a lot of people have the same asnine opinion you have.. blame it on the unions. And Michigan has now joined the ranks of the 'Right to Work' States who have put in legislation designed to destroy the union movement.. a long time goal of Free Market Libertarians.. especially in the Republican Party. This in a state where the unions made their first hard won victories that allowed workers fair wages and protection against exploitation.

That is all falling apart now thanks those parasites of Wall Street and their running dogs in the corridors of power. It is a race to the bottom and NO ONE will be safe. And it is ALL due of Free Trade, Monetarism and 'Free' Market policies.

I don't want to piss on your parade but is it possible some of the population can be due to change of boundaries OR people moving to jurisdictions nearby included in the G.M.A.?

Detroit might just be the first of most of the rest of the world to go bankrupt due to human greed!

Most of the working people did in fact move out of the city proper and into the burbs. Many people that have no concept of business believe that NAFTA destroyed their lives and then outsourcing drove the final nail in the coffin. Perhaps so, but they neglect to ask what caused business to outsource production? ANd why is it there are so many people lined up each and every day to buy these imported products. The answer is that they priced themselves out of the market. High costs and high taxes kills industry. Much like we did with the BC sawmill industry.

Amazing how some do not... will not ... refuse to... take poor city management and massive pensions into consideration.

My city many years ago was a shoe city. Filled with shoe factories. They are all gone... each and every one. We never went bankrupt.

A Canadian invasion of the USA would end up obliterating Canadian identity...whatever that may be.

We already have infiltrated for twenty decades when the signal is given the latent Canadian programing will devour your nation liquor store by liquor store. Our identity, if you like, is to a large extent manufactured by the same media which built your American identity the colder climate has significantly retarded the stulification of our brain cells however, excepting Abertans of course. OK it hasn't been that retarding.
This makes us better of course and you can plainly see it on any map, we are over you already. The opportunity for invasion has passed
and we are thinking nothing of the sort, presently. You do owe us money though.
