Question...
Who thinks that "the customer is ALWAYS right"? Would like to hear from both the consumer and proprietor viewpoint.

Thats an old saying designed to convince consumers in general that The American Dream was set up to serve them.

It has some basis, in that market driven economy will deliver what people are willing to buy, and if they don't they will go out of business or be bought out by competition who will deliever what the consumer wants.

Where it really falls apart, a terrible betrayal of the sentiment of customers being right, is where we THINK we are getting what we want, but are getting cancer instead.

EG - When the detergent is cleaning the clothes and leaving a nice scent, the customer got what he wanted, and the competing producers better keep up. However, no mention of the
Tri-Sodium-Nitrila-tri-acetate* in it, a known nasty kind of carcinogen.

Sorry if I complicated things a bit, but the truth about economic matters, and a corporation's products, is not as simple as customers having the power to determine the marketplace.
Regulatory bodies of our governments are heavily lobbied/interfered with by corporations, and actual regulation is therefore MORE influenced more by corporations than by consumers.

RE: Customer ALWAYS right

The customer is not always right, but they must always leave happy, so er go, even if they are wrong, you find a way to make them happy. But no, they are not always right.

RE: Customer ALWAYS right

One thing too..i think the Customer is Always right philosophy is a North American thing. My friend told me that in Europe, that is not the case nor is it a philosophy of business there...is that true?

Anyone who's ever worked in retail sales as a clerk or cashier knows the customer is not always right. Some customers are obnoxious morons and don't deserve any respect or courtesy (they're the ones who don't show you any), or any effort to make them leave happy. Some customers you're better off without.

I agree with the majority. customers ARE NOT always right. Sometimes they are just retarded. They try to take advantage of the "customer is always right" philosphy and its pure bull. For example I used to work the walmart customer service desk. More then once I have had middle aged women come back to the store and try to return used dirty underwear!!! And when I not only refused to touch it due to biohazardous materials but also refused to return it they all flipped out on me. In this instance the customer was wrong. I have been in FS when LRG has been trying to help dumb people with their computers and let me tell you it is very rare that they are "right". In reality store motto's aren't"the customer is always right", this is just a front for the real motto of "Just keep the dumbass's happy so they will come back and spend more money on pointless crap they don't need".

Ok, I'll weigh in...

The customer is usually right in my business. only because, if he isn't I'm building something wrong.

That does not go to say that everything my customers are always asking for something that is feasable. Often, I have to turn down jobs that will not workout as planned within the cost restraints the customer is looking for. I hate eating cost over runs, so unless the customer is willing to be flexable, I send them on to someone else. As hard as that is to do.

Reversely, I have had customers tell me that my price is out to lunch and they can have some elaborate kitchen built for half of my quote. In those cases, I suggest they go with the cheapest bid and hand them a business card with the request to keep me in mind when they need the job finished, fixed or redone. I have had many come back to me, with those very problems.

Also, people have no idea that stainless steel can and will get scratched. I try to explain the options when I am dealing with a home owner that wants a restaurant style kitchen in their home, and the work and care that must go into keeping it in showroom quality. Pro kitchens, get scratched and lose their original sheen. But that is hardly relavent in a pro kitchen. The sanitary nature of stainless is the goal, not out doing the neighbours. Do you think they listen? Nope. That's why I also offer stainless polishing.

Oh you bet, I'm not sure of the costs, I've never priced out sheet nickel, I'm not even sure I could get it, but I would assume it to be pricy.

The standard kitchen metal is #4 mill finish stainless. If I clear coat it, it costs more, but wears better and scratches in the coat can be fixed. Raw finish is highly susseptable to wear, and if you scratch it and want to maintain a uniform finish, I must refinish the entire surface. Most mill finishes are nearly impossible to reproduce in the field, or once formed. The machinery used is not very postable.

Little piece of info for ya, I don't have any stainless appliances, or kitchen fixtures, cept my kettle and back splashes. There is a reason for that.

Whether the customer is always right or not depends on what your policy is. :D
My mother worked for the Hudson's Bay Co. for 30 years and swore that the customer (however much they may be an ass and not worthy of respect) is always right. My dentist one day, chewed a fella out and sent him home for being late for his app'tment. Didn't bother me a bit, especially after Larry told me the guy was habitually late.

I remember working at an A&W in my last year of high school and, at that time, it was pretty much a given - the customer was always right, (even when they weren't). I quickly found out that working with the public is the hardest job of all (especially in sales/retail) and I wanted no part of it. I am not a confrontational person and i don't do confrontations well. I've just never learned to handle it and I simply prefer not to have to do so.

While I deal with clients on the phone regularly, I don't often deal with them in person. The employees where I work have my employer's permission to simply explain that we don't tolerate abusive language and/or threats and hang up if they continue. Gotta love that!!
