In Saskatchewan you get reported to Social Services, they immediately open a file on you. A worker is sent to investigate. When it comes to children, they wants to make sure the kid is safe.

It's the same in BC but like I said if you know your rights they cannot enter the house without a warrant and have to leave the property if you tell them to unless there is an imminent danger to the child.

The man behind the Surrey vigilante group that claims to hunt predators by luring them into dates is apologizing to an RCMP officer mistakenly named as a target after an ambush this week

"I'd like to apologize to him and his family and hope that he will understand that we are trying to do a public service and that sometimes the public gets carried away,"

"The apology is just what any human being would do for someone who was brought into something they are innocent for," said Laforge.

He is also appealing to the besmirched officer to forgive the group.

"I hope that given what we are doing is to protect the kids I would hope that there would be a little bit of understanding," said Laforge, who urged all followers to stop naming any specific officers.

"It makes us look bad," Laforge posted.

Although when asked if he fears the officer tarred unfairly might sue, Laforge is confident.

"He doesn't really have a leg to stand on. I never said his name once."

On Friday, RCMP announced that they had arrested a Mountie and an investigation into child luring and sexual exploitation allegations was ongoing. That officer's name has not been released.

On Saturday, RCMP confirmed he has now been released from custody with a series of conditions as a result of a judicial bail hearing.

The key there is 'proof' the child is in immediate danger. That is hard to get without a thorough investigation and if you don't let them in or talk to the kids they got nothing but speculation and hearsay unless there is a reliable eyewitness to abuse. The only other thing that could trigger them would be taking an obviously neglected or malnourished kid to a doctor because they have an obligation to report to authorities.

I don't know the law on this, but I would guess that we're dealing with two different burdens of proof. To take the child, they probably need proof on a mere balance of probabilities. In other words, that it is more probable that the child is being abused than it is not. Essentially proof of guilt beyond 50%.

To charge the parent, they'd need proof beyond a reasonable doubt. Essentially at leat a 90% chance that he is guilty.

So yes they need proof, but I'm sure the burden of proof required is far less than that required to arrest the parent.

Edmonton police describe Creep Catchers vigilantes as "reckless" after woman targeted by group commits suicide
By Dave Lazzarino
First posted: Thursday, September 29, 2016 09:13 PM EDT | Updated: Friday, September 30, 2016 09:59 AM EDT
Edmonton police say a vigilante group out to expose child predators are "reckless" and doing "more harm than good" after reports surfaced that a woman targeted in a sting by the group committed suicide.
"What Creep Catchers is doing is a one-off, a reckless one-off where there's no repercussions. The person is free to go to continue to offend ... It's a reckless protocol with no oversight," said acting Staff Sgt. Stephen Camp of Alberta's Integrated Child Exploitation Unit.
The head of the group, John Doep, took to social media in reaction to reports that a Creep Catchers operation may have led to the recent suicide of an Edmonton woman.
"There are not enough police online. Citizens need to stand up and play the role the current system can't afford," Doep wrote.
The price of the group's actions, however, is greater than the benefits, police said.
The woman, 27-year-old Katelynn McKnight, was featured in a Creep Catchers video that accused her of trying to lure a young girl for sex. The young girl, it turns out, was actually Doep.
Family members of McKnight have since accused Doep and his vigilante group of targeting vulnerable people.
Along with the larger-picture issues of vigilante justice — a lack of due process, undermining the rule of law, putting people at unnecessary risk — Camp said there are practical issues that impact the ability of police to do their jobs.
"We can't do anything when a vigilante group comes in and completely implodes or disrupts everything. Even if we wanted to go after this person that they just exposed, there's no way," Camp said. "In a practical sense, if someone has just been caught in a civilian sting, they're not going to engage with an undercover operator online."
He said he has seen instances when people being investigated by the ICE unit were approached by Creep Catchers. They then left the city and went on to commit crimes in other jurisdictions.
Added to that, when police arrest someone with mental health issues, they take that into account and it becomes part of the long-term, court-ordered plan to deal with them.
Camp said even if Creep Catchers methods were proper — which they are not — there are conflicts that would make co-operation with the group impossible.
"As we can see from analyzing their website, they're a for-profit organization," Camp said. "They're in it for a number of reasons (and) one of them is commercial enterprise. We can't be involved in anything like that."
He said he wants to remind people if they have information about sexual predators, the way to get results is to inform police, either in-person or with a phone call to a station or anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
"If we did a press release every time we caught a person involved in child porn, we'd be doing a weekly press release, 52 times a year. And after a while it becomes a story lost," Camp said.
"Globally, the police are actively involved in investigations involving people looking for sex with children. This goes on every day, 365 days a year."

That last article brings up many good points. The fact that it's for profit raises eyebrows too. Improbable, granted, but always a risk of making stuff up for the cash.

More detriment than asset methinks. Even if they get the right guy, it doesn't take much to f**k up a court case and get the A$$hole acquitted! :)

Creep Busters ambush of man with mental disability

Jaxson Jacoe is 21 going on 13.

The Burnaby man doesn't just look young. His father says he has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) that's left him developmentally delayed and mentally challenged, with a pre-teen's understanding of the world.

His family is now speaking up, saying Jacoe was humiliated and lost a job he loved after being caught up in a sting orchestrated by online groups aiming to catch sexual predators.

In late February, Jacoe decided he wanted his first girlfriend. A buddy recommended he use a dating app.

Almost immediately, Jacoe was approached online by a woman going by the name Ashley. Her posted age was 19.

"She messaged me first, saying I was cute and I want to ask you out on date," recalls Jacoe. "And I responded back saying 'Thank you.'"

But Ashley had a surprise. A short time later she revealed she was actually 14.

Jacoe said that was OK.

On Feb. 20, Jacoe was ambushed outside his workplace. The confrontation was caught on camera by two men who had posed as Ashley online.

"They were harassing me, they were bullying me", he says, his voice shaking.

"They just approached me and started videotaping me and I had no idea what was going on."

In the video, one man identifies himself as a member of the White Rock Creep Catchers.

The other says he's Cody Hunter of the Langley Creep Busters.

CBC News wanted to talk to the men who confronted Jacoe, identified as Douglas Perry of White Rock Creep Catchers and Cody Hunter of Langley Creep Busters on their Facebook pages.

They declined an on-camera interview.

Hunter, however, provided this explanation over Facebook messaging: "We did not see anything mentally wrong with Jax(s)on on the catch or in the chats … he knew what he was doing was wrong."

About the article. ADHD only listed as a neurological/mental/etc disorder/disease, **** that. I have "ADHD" and if you ask some people around here they might think that i'm also developmentally delayed and mentally challenged but even i know that you don't become friends with little girls of that age. Like wtf?

While on the other hand, is the community really getting any benefit from having an organization like Creep Busters operate this way? Wouldn't it be better to bring this information about potential pedophiles to the authorities and let them police the sh!t out of the matter? Go to the station, be like, "Look at this" and they will do and say whatever cops do and say in those situations. Next thing you know this stuff will inspire others to copy then you will have organizations that will take money to publicly shame dads who don't pay child support .

If the rcmp wold have released the name of the right cop in the beginning much problems could have been prevented. Creep Catchers can do many things the police cannot do which is partly why they are much more successful. They also don't need to make the evidence stand up in our joke of a just us system.

The problem is one mistake can cost the rest of us a lot of money, not to mention getting a lot of sympathy for the "perpetrator".

Detriment.

These guys are seriously lacking something in their psychological make-up, and are trying to compensate by finding someone to hunt that is lower than they.

Outrageous.

They can destroy a person's life with no evidence. They don't give a hoot whether you are innocent or guilty, they just want the hunt and the triumph.

Outrageous.

We have due process and the assumption of innocence for a reason.

These guys are a bad joke.

Canada has very lax rules around entrapment and they only apply to the cops. A cop has to basically light up a joint then hand it to you then arrest you. If they pressure you to buy some drugs or an UC posing as a hooker asks you multiple times before you agree. It is a lot different her than down south.
Worried about joints,no wonder progress on " the war" on drugs is slow

Creep Catchers vs Mr Big stings, same thing in technique s
Both should have perimeters of ethical boundaries but they don't,sonow what?
15 year old girls have been having sex with older men since the beginning of time
Creep Catchers are losers

Oh yes,I forgot designer s and managers if Mr,Big stings are losers too

It sounds like the kind of sh*t Cannuck would engage in. He's already admitted squirting shaving cream on a guy's gear shift. :) :)

Really? This is your contribution?

How about this......I'd really be watching some middle aged jobless man that lives in a fu cking travel trailer. Make sure no little kids are any where around.

Hmmmmmmmmm- the "middle aged jobless man" is 50 and works 40 hours a week building components to install in Big Foot campers. :) :) :) He's a "jack of all trades".
What does a man's occupation or dwelling have to do with the safety of children? He is the father of two grown daughters. Talk about stereo typing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
