If you consider the possibility that Canadian Satellites can be damaged by the space debris created by blowing that satellite up, it's not really good news.

Here we have an example of defeatist regressive thinking. Some people refuse to see the positive side of a story no matter how obvious it is. Competition and consumer choice and economic development
especially in the areospace sector will spur job creation and spinoffs that your position fails to consider.A destroyed Canadian satellite would promote capital investment in this neglected area of our economy and get our stagnant economy back on track. Downside, what phucking downside?

Yeah, what he said, I thought capitalism and planned/forced obsolescence and all that jazz was the best way??

This is a good step in the right direction, TRUE global competition in EVERY sector- PURE capitalism, which I've always heard was AWESOME, it's finally here and all folks can do is kvetch

Perhaps you haven't heard of Telesat http://www.telesat.ca/, a Canadian company which is widely respected in the aerospace industry. They certainly are not lacking in funding, nor would i consider this to be neglected part of our economy. This image shows a few of the satellites they currently operate.

Since the US adopted the Bush Doctrine,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bush_Doctrine

countries like China face a real threat of an unprovoked American attack. This threat is why China would be prudent to develop the ability not only to defend themselves, but inflict real pain on the US now rather than wait for a crisis.

China has repeatedly stated that it would rather not weaponize space,

http://cns.miis.edu/research/space/china/arms.htm

but the reality is, the US already has an advanced military space program.

http://www.fas.org/spp/military/program/index.html

Because of the Bush Doctrine and America's advanced military space program, China has no choice but to develop its own military space program for its own security.

Are you REALLY that .........naive?

The Chinese have been stealing American nuclear weapons and missile technology for at least 15 years...........long before Bush.

They have been sinking increasing billions into the military, and becoming increasingly belligerent........for decades.

Defense has very little to do with it...........they want Taiwan back.

They are flexing their muscle.

Before Bush, a Chinese diplomat threatened to turn Los Angeles to ash over Taiwan.

The Chinese are very, very dangerous.

Meanwhile, we continue to sell them the rope they will hang us with.

And China is scarier than the US?

Oh yes.

Absolutely.

The Americans are our friends and allies. Although they recently have suffered a case of the hiccups, they are still at the core a free and democratic society. They are related to us by blood, by culture, and by political history.

China is a massive dictatorship..........although it is ruled by a party calling itself Communist, it is really a fascist state..........tightly controlled capitalism, tiny upper class, gov't-encouraged nationalist fervor aimed at historic enemies, no free press, single party state. I absolutely fills the bill.

China is the undoing of the West. Gosh, they're clever. And on so many fronts. A stick in every pot. This week, we're told the Chinese middle class is all agog about emigrating to Canada, sticking it out here for a pension, and then collecting it back on the mainland. China too is facing a monstrous demographic crisis and a subsequent pension crunch. We're also told the Chinese are going to be more restrictive about who gets to adopt their baby girls. I said girls. With the the one child policy in effect, families all over China are dumping their infant girls in orphanages so they can try again for a boy. Westerners are lining up to aid in this hideous cultural malpractice.
There's a story almost every day about China in the press and anyone with a brain has to ask- how the hell is the country getting away with it?

Nuts. America has no friends. It is a large facsimile of J R Ewing from that "Dallas" show that was on tv till early '80s. They have business acquaintances, military allies, etc., but America can turn on an ally or business partner in the blink of an eye and has done so.
That they can be allies means nothing. Hitler had allies. Hussein had allies.
I would hardly call America "free". Perhaps the general public believes in the delusion of freedom and liberty, but the administration believes it has the freedom to do whatever it wishes to its public and anyone else.
Whether we are related or close is irrelevant.
Authoritarianism is authoritarianism, whether it is communist fascist pseudodemocratic, or whatever and America is authoritarian. Or if you wish, it is totalitarian.

It is absolutely narcissistic.

Canada??? Thought we were talking about who was scarier, USA or China.

Um, anyway, yes, Canada is authoritarian. Politicians seem to think that just because the public votes them into office, they can assume the public agrees with everything elected politicians stand for and proceed on that assumption. The biggest ASSumer I've seen in a long time was aPAULing Martin. He was always saying stuff, like, "Canadians stand for this" and "Canadians like that" and "Canadians want such-and-such" in spite of polls saying otherwise.

I guess that'll be resolved in the future as we see which one first tests our territorial sovereignty. Or which one whose aggressive actions first commands our deployment of troops to safeguard our interests or that of another affected international community member.

How does China get away with it? Easy

First off they oppose the US and like some people are demonstrating here in this thread... any country who opposes the US... ANY COUNTRY... is good by them.

Second... China could care less what you say or think of them. China will do as it will do and you can pound your desk all day and they will just smile and nod.

Take for example your beloved Kyoto Agreement. China would not sign on because they consider themselves a developing nation. They have a SPACE PROGRAM for crying out loud! How is that a developing nation!? And people who are just so anti-US just take it and try to justify it. If the green nuts went after China for not signing like they did the US it would be an excersise in futility. They know it... at least with the US they have an audience for their tantrums.

Oooooo... you are such a mean commie. I thought you guys were extinct.

If you ever get to Boston you should go to Harvard Square and sit around with the old hippies trying to sell their Maxist ideolgy to teenage runaways.

The report on China dated Jan. 19th has a paragraph that I find very telling of the US attitude.
Quote:
In late August, President Bush authorized a new national space policy that ignored calls for a global prohibition on such tests. The policy said the United States would “preserve its rights, capabilities, and freedom of action in space” and “dissuade or deter others from either impeding those rights or developing capabilities intended to do so.” It declared the United States would “deny, if necessary, adversaries the use of space capabilities hostile to U.S. national interests.”
End Quote
It show their true face (I specify the government not the people).

Michael Krepon, co-founder of the Henry L. Stimson Center, a group that studies national security, called the Chinese test very un-Chinese.
“There’s nothing subtle about this,” he said. “They’ve created a huge debris cloud that will last a quarter century or more. It’s at a higher elevation than the test we did in 1985, and for that one the last trackable debris took 17 years to clear out.”

Well they're your boys. Thanks China for making the world (and now space) more dangerous for all.
