This has got to be the ONLY forum I have ever been on where I was called a rightwinger.....ROFLMAO...so being responsible for ones own actions is a rightwing concept is it.......and I LOVE this one.....he/she is an addict...SO... that maybe the REASON that they gamble/do drugs/drink alcohol accessivley, but it sure as hell isn't an EXCUSE for their individual actions.

As for who is responsible for teaching a child personal responsibility...that would be the PARENTS...novel concept eh...parents actually teaching their child instead of relying on the state or someone else to do it for them. I guess that would be another personal responsibility.

I'm curious beaver....are you responsible for anything, or is it everyone elses responsibility?

Would a moderater ban this guy off the board? I've only recently started posting here and from a simple thread about Casino's being open on christmas day, he calls me the "problem", i shoudn't be allowed to vote, somehow feels he can assume my political beliefs and decides to top it off with

"I certainly hope you're not allowed to instruct children or procreate"

How about the more adult response of arguing back or ignoring - in other words, taking "personal responsibility" for how you are treated?

Having been a blackjack dealer while going to college, I've seen first hand how well thought out casinos are.

They are designed to look exciting, mysterious, and friendly. They are designed to exaggerate the occasional wins (loud bells and bright lights go off whenever someone wins) while ignoring the constant losing of every one else.

The games are designed to take just a little bit of your money with every hand, and to repay with a modest win just often enough to keep you at the table.

I could go on about there being no clocks on the wall, the peer pressure to stay at the table, the anxious urge to try to win back what was just lost, the fallacy of thinking that "it's my turn" or "I feel lucky" or the myriad other mind games casinos use to manipulate and lure the gamers.

Black-hearted sharks, the lot of them.

Sure personal responsibility plays a role - I myself never go into a casino unless I'm hired to do so. Let's not forget, however, just how tilted in favour of the casino the playing field is.

Gerryh:

Instead of preteen taunts (see your last post for an example), why not make cogent arguments that actually help make your case?

You'd find a much friendlier reception and people might even take you seriously.

Or do you come here just to insult from a distance (and anonymously) and troll?

Again - avoiding the question and not taking personal responsibility for your own actions.

Really, I'm not trying to flame, it is just that this juvenile level of gainsaying is really frikkin' boring and it ruins good threads.

Oh, poor Gerryh:

So poor in anything substantive to say after you've exhausted your opinions, you resort to trolling.

To answer your question directly the good parts of any thread are where people talk about the subject at hand, with varying opinions, backed up by facts, and writing and reading with a willingness to grant that somebody else might be right.

That's how we learn, Gerryh. That is when these threads are the most fun. They are at the most tedious when people post like you have been.

Write about things you know, or have recently learned, answer posts you disagree with using data, not insults and taunts.

Anyone who don't think gambling is a problem should check out some of the treatment centers that have popped up across the country in recent years. The people there will tell you how insidious and devastating this disease can be. It is a terrible addiction that will eat away at your soul and leave you scarred for life. Like any addiction, it can be controlled. It's all psychological. And it doesn't just happen to the less fortunate of our society. Doctors, lawyers, educators, politicians...anyone can fall into the trap if they're predisposed to addictive behaviour. As for the people who look down their noses at the problem gambler...don't judge until you walk a mile in their shoes.
And the biggest addicts of all....our governments!!

Yup. I agree. In Alberta a town tried to get rid of VLTs. The province did everything they could to stop the plebiscite, and when it passed, they did everything they could to say the vote was meaningless.

Does anyone know how that all turned out?

But some consider themselves immune because of the god given "personal responsibility". I think they're mean spirited little people who wouldn't give to the poor or the sick and will use the "personal responsibility" device to avoid the humane responsibility we all have for each other, isn't it written that we are our brothers keeper? How irresponsible can someone be not to recognize the horrors of addiction?

Same type of thing happened in Nova Scotia a few years ago.
