Yeah, we can split hairs and do the

1) those that helped and planned
2) those who's lucky number was drawn to go
3) those that physically went into the tunnels
4) those that made it out the other end
5) those that were executed
6) those that were recaptured
7) those that made a clean getaway

Were they involved in, or did they escape. Were they security or did they dig. Who cares. Many helped, and a lucky few were chosen and a small number went out. Big deal. It was a team effort by men from several nations. Not just the brits.

According to the Geneva Convention, that wasn't allowed. A POW's job is to escape. War is such ungentlemanly business

No it wasnt allowed, but it was well known that the Nazis were not sticklers for the Geneva Convention. Though they did follow it more often with the western allies than with the Russians - though that isnt saying much. The whole idea of having laws to regulate wars is a bit funny. If people were reasonable enough to follow those they would be reasonable enough not to go to war at all. The rules always go out the window when they become inconvenient.
