I like Les's idea: move the women, kids, dads, and elderly out of Afghanistan to good places to live and let the idiots deal with each other.

Canada is supposedly in Afghanistan to help this country become a stable democracy. Yet our leaders and the news seem quite willing to ignore election irregularities and obvious fraud which undermines Afghanistan's fledgling democracy. Sure the pro-west candidate seems to be the main beneficiary, but perhaps someone explain how this silence furthers Canada's goals.

Also why has the western media not given this story as much hype as the Iranian elections. Iran's elections were merely suspicious, while Afghanistan's elections were blatantly fraudulent. I'm sure the rest of the world must think we are hypocrites.

Hither and yon
Why would anyone assume a peaceful democratic society would take root in the first place?
Afghanistan is an ancient, barbaric land that has been ruled by naked force wielded by local tribes, smugglers and cliques for hundreds of years.
Afghanistan has never been defeated.
Its tribes consist of ruthless, illiterate fighters, looters, land pirates and drug traffickers.
Why should they suddenly change?
Because we in the West think they should?
Afghanis want no part of Western culture, Western legal systems or Western religious beliefs.
Time to bring the troops home and leave Afghanistan to the Afghans.
It's their land, let them work it out.

You bet! Five years ago when I said that everybody jumped down my throat, now it is becoming glaringly apparent.

''The Real Reason for More Troops in Afghanistan ''

The Real Reason for More Troops in Afghanistan « Patrick J. Buchanan

''Obama’s contemplation of whether to send additional troops to Afghanistan is simply those who control him providing Obama with the opportunity to look “presidential.” The decision to send additional troops was reached prior to the situational comedy of General McChrystal’s leaked “confidential report” to the Washington Post and Obama’s National Security Advisor’s public admonishment of McChrystal’s failure to follow the chain of command. All of this is nothing but a well-rehearsed, though poorly camouflaged hoax. Additional troops will be sent to Afghanistan within a very short period of time and Obama really has no say in the matter. The question is: why?''

Buchanan is an arch conservative and even he opposes the war on Afghanistan.
