Since you hardly ever use smileys, I don't know when you're serious or not, regardless, money isn't everything in life. All these billions mean nothing when you're terminally ill or severely handicapped. When you lose someone you love, no money can bring them back.

But money isn't the ultimate evil motivator, with money, comes power, and sometimes power is obtained by means other than money (see elected or non elected officials). Power is the ultimate corruptor, and it is this power, that in my opinion, many socialists, fascists etc.. that have ruled have managed to secure, at whatever costs. That's what they inevitably seek, power.

All "isms" seek power. Capitalism, Socialism, Communism etc...

Sometimes we argue and debate to wipe out capitalism, and do you think that would wipe out the lust for power? Not even close.

I respect countries with laws, I pay special attention to constitutional laws in particular, it's one of my hobbies. I don't believe in this "behind the scenes sovereign country that the west has no business interfering". To me all that means is a fascist state playing with power at the expense of its people.

End Rant.

The excuse is only partly true. Supply and demand is being controlled by the oil companies. They have not built new refineries for nearly thirty years, and the damaged ones arae not receiving enough attention, and the reason is they are making way more money creating the shortages they desire. Couple that with the increased demand from India and China and there is a problem.
What we need is a government with the control to force these companies to act, and provide more fuel, and why won't they?
The tax revenue they receive, and the other fact is most of these governments are under the control of transnational corperations.
All the speeches and double tax are a mere dog and pony show for the average guy in the street. At present one leader Hugo Chavez is willing to stand up against big oil, only because he has moe oil than big oil.
I see stuff like this, and more and more I am becoming a nationalist, who believes in energy at the Canadian price and the world gets whats left at the world price, and all resources should be controlled by the federal government.

They didn't build a refinery for 30 years, damngrumpy, because the return on invested capital was horrible until a few years ago. They didn't build new refiners because shareholders finally said "enough, you're wasting capital and destoying value." Refining has historically been one of the worst, most volatile, most commoditized businesses going.

Plus, try and build a refiner in America. Every environmental interest group screams when companies start siting. Its NIMBY big time.

Finally, its a bit of a disingenuous argument because it makes it sound like there has been no capacity come on line. That is wrong. Companies have added capacity to existing facilities periodically when they go for scheduled down time.
