Carbon taxation does indeed work, but at rates much higher than we are currently paying here. Sweden introduced a carbon tax in 1991 and their present day rate is the highest in the world at roughly $187CDN/ton. During the same time period Sweden's economy grew by 60%, and carbon emissions decreased by 25%.
Canadians currently pay in the neighbourhood of $30/ton which is far from high enough to serve as any sort of "enticement" to move away from fossil fuel consumption. Add to that self admitted climate change deniers like Jason Kenney and Andrew Scheer who see the carbon tax as little more than a political football to be used as a vote-garnering bribe and you have a recipe for a giant step backwards in environmental responsibility.
Was it really Carbon Taxes that dropped Swedish emissions?

You missed my point. We aren't paying enough yet for the price to be an effective deterrent, all it's doing is causing a bunch of whining. Here in BC the carbon tax component on a liter of regular gas was just under nine cents as of April 1st of this year. Do you think it will have any effect when it hits a dollar a liter, when the cost of filling your tank goes up to two or three hundred dollars? The whole idea of carbon taxes is to coax people out of their gas guzzlers on to mass transit or alternative fuels by making gasoline just to damned expensive to use, just like the poster back a page or so said, the one who likes to yell. We have found over the past fifty years or so that folks could care less for the science even though is it pretty much indisputable at this point. Fossil fuels are on the way out, that much is certain. How long that takes and how expensive it gets remains to be seen. All we are seeing right now isn't even serious foreplay, the real screwing is yet to come. But such is the cost of apathy and procrastination.
