Why do millions of Christians in the United States believe that their faith, financial status and health are all intertwined? That's the question that Paul Kennedy explores with Kate Bowler, author of Blessed: A History of the American Prosperity Gospel. They turn to the early 20th century beginnings of this uniquely made-in-America brand of theology, where it was first preached in pentecostal tent revivals. Now it's being preached from mega-churches across the country. For many, it is a key to a richer and fuller life. For its critics, it's hucksterism at its worst.

Jesus claimed that if you have faith without doubt, you can move mountains. Preachers like Creflo Dollars, Joel Osteen, Benny Hinn, and Joyce Meyers would like you to know that if you have faith without doubt you can move wads of cash into your bank account. This "good news" is called the prosperity gospel, which promotes the belief that one's financial status and health are blessings from God. It is the subject of author Kate Bowler's compelling book Blessed: A History of the American Prosperity Gospel.

The prosperity gospel is an American Christian movement that stretches back to the early 20th century. Kate Bowler writes, "The roots of the modern prosperity gospel are long and tangled. To understand the size, success, and diversity of today's movement, we first need to understand certain ways of thinking about spiritual power that emerged and competed for attention early in the twentieth century. The thinking took many forms and went by different names, including the mind-cure, success literature, positive thinking, self-help, and prosperity theology ... This was the core: adherents, acting in accordance with divine principles, relied on their minds to transform thought and speech into heaven-sent blessings."

From the pentecostal tent revivals of the early 1900's to present day mega-churches the success of the prosperity gospel has been phenomenal. The marketplace is flooded with books, magazines, audio tapes, workshops, DVDs, and workshops touting the wealth and health that God bestows upon those who embrace this gospel. With its roots firmly in America, is there something that makes it a uniquely American phenomenon? Ms. Bower replies, "The message certainly resonated with a set of national characteristics deeply embedded in the American social imaginary." Those "national characteristics", according to her, are reflected in the qualities that make achieving the American Dream possible: hard work, moral fiber, and an entrepreneurial spirit. For many Americans the man who embodies these qualities at the moment is Donald Trump, whose pastor, Mark Burns, just so happens to be a preacher of the prosperity gospel.

Though there are many critics within and without religious circles of this "uniquely American phenomenon" its success shows no signs of faltering. Not that surprising given what it offers to believers. Ms. Bowler writes, "One level, the appeal of the prosperity theology is obvious ... The faith movement sells a compelling bill of goods: God, wealth, and a healthy body to enjoy it. But it is the enjoyment, the feelings that lift believers' chins and square their shoulders. That is its fundamental achievement. The first step in accessing this good news is the belief that things can get better. The prosperity gospel's chief allure is simple optimism."

Kate Bowler is Assistant Professor of American Religion at Duke Divinity School in Durham North Carolina. She is presently working on her memoirs, which will be published by Random House.

That only brings on the test about the material things becoming so important that they cost you your life as you aren't willing to live them behind and any hesitation will cost you time that you don't have to spare.
The man that wanted to follow Jesus but was unwilling to leave his inheritance behind so he didn't end up following Jesus. If he had he would have been in the group that is brought to life for the 1,000 year reign rather than being in the 2nd group that has to wait until the Great White Throne. If the delay can be avoided then that would seem to be the most desired path. A live witness to many that hesitate at the wrong moment.

Why do millions of Christians in the United States believe that their faith, financial status and health are all intertwined? That's the question that Paul Kennedy explores with Kate Bowler, author of Blessed: A History of the American Prosperity Gospel.

Interesting topic.

Many points here are to be discussed:

1- Every blessing or bounty is from God, and so He should be thanked for it; man will be asked on Judgment Day about the blessings or bounties: did he show gratitude to God about them?

2- When people are grateful and are thankful to God alone (not to other gods or angels or prophets or the Christ), then God will give them more blessings: much provision and will increase their bounties on condition they are believers in God alone without associate.

3- God, out of His generosity, gives in the life of this World to both parties: the believers and the unbelievers; while in the Next Life, His offering is only to believers who worked the righteous work and who gave charity for God's sake alone (not for the sake of others.)

4- God gives to man in a way not proportional to his belief or faith: it is only for testing or trial; so God once gives to man the profuse provision and riches, and once he impoverishes him to see will he forbear patiently if he impoverishes him, and will he be grateful if he enriches him.

5- A serious misconception: the rich man will think that God loves him and so He gives to him, and that if he goes to the Next Life, certainly God will give to him more, because He prefers and loves him; while if He impoverishes him or restricts his provision, man will think that God hates him.

Quarn 16: 112-113, which mean:

{112. God propounds an example [to the people of Mecca]: a city [of Sheba] that was

secure [of the enemy: none transgressed on it],

peacefully safe [of any usurper and transgressor],

and amply provided with its sustenance from everywhere;

yet it was ungrateful of the bounties of its Lord [as are the people of Mecca ungrateful to God];

so God seized it with starvation and terror because of [the idols] that they made [and worshipped.]
a

113. And there came to them an apostle from among themselves, but they called him a liar, so the torment seized them, while yet they were wrong-doers. b}
........................................................................

112 a They were the people of Sheba; God destroyed their Dam of Ma’arib, so their water went away, their trees dried up, their land became barren and their plant decreased, so that they suffered from starvation, and God cast enmity among them and they were divided and scattered.

113 b God – be glorified – propounded a parable to the people of Mecca by the city of Sheba in Yemen, when its people were secure, living peacefully and with their provision coming to them amply from everywhere; but when God sent them an apostle, they denied and hurt him, so God humiliated them with starvation and disease and scattered them throughout the land.

And as such, were the people of Mecca secure and living peacefully with their provision coming to them from everywhere, but when God sent them Mohammed, they denied and hurt him; so unless they should abstain from hurting him and unless they should believe in him, God would humiliate and scatter them as had He scattered the people of Sheba.

God – be glorified – said about their story, in the Quran 34: 19, which means:

(But they said: "Our Lord, prolong the interval [stations] of our travels"; and they wronged themselves [by committing the disobedience], so We made them as but tales, and We scattered them utterly. Surely, in that are signs [and lessons] for every enduring and grateful man.)

The interpretation is by Mohammed-Ali Hassan Al-Hilly.

The words ascribed to Jesus Christ that he said: If you obey God, you can do anything, even you can move mountains...

A similar words ascribed to Prophet Mohammed that he said: God says: "My servant, obey Me, and you will be like Me: you say to anything: Be! and it will be as you ordered."

Abu abd-Allah said: "How can that be true: that the servant will be like God? This is not correct."

Some read it (in Arabic): like Me, and others read it (you will be My example)

But the thing is that when man believes in God alone without associate and he obeys God, then when he prays .. God will answer his prayer; but this is up to God: if He likes to answer or not; and if He answers immediately or postpones it for another time, or if He does not want to answer the prayer .. this is according to His will and wisdom; none can compel Him to do anything.

Quran 13: 14, which means:
{His [preaching] is the preaching of truth a;

but those who call to other than Him
b, they answer them not at all c, save as one [soul] who stretches out his hands to the water d that it may reach his [spiritual] mouth, but it reaches it not e;

for the praying of unbelievers [of the idols] is only in missing [of the truth.]
}
......................................................................

15 a It means: The one who invites people to God alone, and forbids the worshipping of idols, then his invitation is an invitation of truth, and he is correct in his inviting [others to God], and if he asks his need from God, He will answer him.
15 b i.e. those who invite people to worship the idols, and they ask their needs from the idols.
15 c i.e. they will not grant them their needs, because the idols are inanimate and they do not harm nor profit anyone. Moreover, the angels do not hear their request, because they are far away from them in the heavens, and even if they hear, they will not answer them, because the affair altogether is by God’s hand, not by the hand of angels, neither by the hand of prophets, nor by any otherone ‘brought close to God’.
Therefore, their praying of the peers [whom they allege to God] is useless, and nothing can be obtained from asking them, but only the ‘wishes’; it means: they will not have any benefit from asking of the idols and peers, but only the wishful thinking of such associaters and idolaters and their delusions which are within themselves, when they say: The idols will help us against our enemies and grant us our needs and intercedes for us before God; therefore, the parable for these associaters and their asking of the idols is:
15 d i.e. like a man who has gone, following his death, to the world of souls, and he, being thirsty, approaches the river and stretches out his hands to the water to scoop and drink, but he cannot do that because he has become spiritual and light like the air while the water is heavy, so he cannot carry the water to drink it. So when he desperates of that river, he returns with his thirst and loses his hope. Therefore, similarly the one who stretches out his hands to the idols or to other creatures and asks his needs from them hoping that they will grant him his needs, will return with frustration and loss.
15 e Because the water is material and heavy, while the soul is ethereal and light and cannot carry it neither can it drink of it. While about the righteous souls: they will drink ethereal water brought by the angels from Paradise. Refer to my book: Man after Death

Lastly, the American people have much prosperity, and God bestowed on them so many of His bounties, but yet they (like the other peoples and nations) followed the atheism and others among them followed the enthusiasm about Jesus Christ so they consider him as God Himself, or part of God or son of God and that is on account of their enthusiasm.
Moreover, they contradicted all the commandments of God, particularly the First Commandment, and they legalized the homosexuality and the adultery and the abortion, and the men live unlawfully with women with adultery in the name of love; so instead of the marriage, they substituted it with girlfriends and boyfriend .. etc.

GOP lawmaker: The Bible says ‘if a man will not work, he shall not eat’

One lawmaker is citing a godly reference to justify changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program: Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-Tex.) recently quoted the New Testament to question the strength of current work requirements.

The biblical passage, 2 Thessalonians 3-10, was a rebuttal to one of the hearing’s expert witnesses, a representative of the Jewish anti-hunger group MAZON. It is also a familiar refrain to anyone who has watched past debates about SNAP.

House Republicans have historically cited the verse — “if a man will not work, he shall not eat” — as justification for cutting some adults’ SNAP benefits. Arrington referenced the verse in a discussion about increasing the work requirements for unemployed adults on the food stamp program. But critics say that advances a pernicious myth about the unemployed who receive SNAP.

But policy experts say that is not the case. Many unemployed adults on SNAP simply cannot work, they say. Those include the mentally ill, the borderline disabled and veterans.

The debate comes at a time of increased Republican concern about work requirements and welfare programs. The failed Republican repeal-and-replace health-care plan included such requirements for Medicaid recipients; House Speaker Paul D. Ryan also championed them. And earlier this week, Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-Wis.) introduced a bill that would prevent the secretary of agriculture from granting temporary SNAP work-requirement waivers to states with high rates of unemployment.

Why don't these conservative Christians cite these passages...........

Luke 14:12-14 He said also to the one who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid. But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”
Or this one?
Matthew 25:34-36 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.”
Or follow this piece of advice.
Mark 10:21-22 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

Matthew 19:21

All these I have kept,” said the young man. “What do I still lack?” 21Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow Me.” 22When the young man heard this, he went away in sorrow, because he had great wealth.…

They seem to pick the quotes that align with their views. When you cherry-pick verses out of context you can justify anything, that is exactly why you ARE NOT supposed to do that. And it's the same thing the Wahhabi (fundie) Muslims who cherry-pick the Koran to justify terrorism, honor killings, and the sort of vile shit ISIS is doing.........

Interesting that the law maker quotes our good friend Saul.

And he does so out of context.........

Stereotypes about people in need of help are, of course, almost as old as Judeo-Christian scripture itself.

MAZON’s senior engagement officer, Rabbi Erin Glazer, points to Hebrew Bible passages that instruct believers not to judge those in need of their help.

Before Arrington, 2 Thessalonians was used by Reps. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) and Stephen Lee Fincher (R-Tenn.) to justify cutting food stamps during the 2013 Farm Bill.

The verse also makes regular appearances in the conservative blogosphere.

In 2015, the far-right Breitbart News misquoted Pope Francis in a post that implied the Catholic leader sought to keep food from people who did not work.

The English transcript of the pope’s remarks make it clear that he said no such thing and most Judeo-Christian faith leaders agree that 2 Thessalonians applies narrowly to people who can work but choose not to.

The passage, written by Saint Paul, was not addressed to the poor or hungry generally, said the Rev. David Beckmann, a Lutheran pastor and the president of the faith-based anti-hunger organization Bread for the World. It was written to a specific sect of early Christians, who had abandoned many aspects of their regular lives because they believed the apocalypse was imminent.

“The sin is sloth, indolence, inactivity,” echoed Al Mohler, the president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, a prominent evangelical school. “This is not an issue of inability. I don’t think it has been, in the history of the church.”

“The common refrain, repeated across the Jewish, Christian and Muslim sacred texts, is that we must care for the most vulnerable,” she said. “To hold up three particular words and use it to create policy? That doesn’t work.”

Kinda takes your mind off of grace and forgiveness. Saul embraces them in one moment and then contradicts them repeatedly. No wonder Christians are confused.
