Ex-leader of Westboro Baptist reportedly on death bed

The former leader of the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church is reportedly on his death bed, his estranged son says.
Nate Phelps, who lives in Calgary, wrote his father, Fred Phelps Sr., “is now on the edge of death” in a Facebook post Saturday.
He added he has not been allowed to see his dying father.
“I feel sad for all the hurt he's caused so many. I feel sad for those who will lose the grandfather and father they loved. And I'm bitterly angry that my family is blocking the family members who left from seeing him, and saying their good-byes,” Nate Phelps wrote.
“I'm not sure how I feel about this. Terribly ironic that his devotion to his god ends this way. Destroyed by the monster he made.”
On its website, the church said Fred Phelps “has health issues, but the idea that someone would suggest that he is near death, is not only highly speculative, but foolish considering that all such matters are the sole prerogative of God.”
The church has gained notoriety for picketing funerals of soldiers killed in Afghanistan and Iraq with signs that read, Thank God For Dead Soldiers, Fag Troops, God Blew Up The Troops, and America Is Doomed.
Phelps Sr., 84, is a former attorney who was disbarred in 1979. He was excommunicated from the church last August, his son says.

As far as i am aware, the ENTIRE Westboro Baptist Church was composed of one family, descendants of its founder Fred Phelps. Nobody else joined to do placard carrying demonstrations at military funerals. 'nuff said.

Oh well. Hopefully the whole WBC thing will collapse in on itself after he goes.

I wonder if there will be protests.

Really, I hope not ... unless it's of the wall of backs variety. Those type of "people" aren't deserving of the attention they demand.

Embracing hate probably has a similar effect. Sure does stain the soul, I can imagine it doesn't really do much for the shell either.
Those eyes are scary. Remind me of my father-in-law's. The day he died, I felt the weight of the world lifted off my shoulders. I had nobody to hate any more.

Great time to protest a funeral no? :)

To be honest, no. Then the people protesting the funeral would be no better than the vile individuals that protested the other funerals. If people really wanted to get their ire up they should just ignore his funeral (whenever that ends up being) as being one of a person that truly was insignificant.

In this case I don't agree , they deserve the same respect they gave . Let them whine about the protest , show them how it feels to have the shoe on the other foot because people like this are unsympathetic and should be served as such , maybe they would understand a bit.

In any other case I would agree with SS , not this time

He is right in the sense that you never do yourself any favours by lowering your standards. And in all honesty, if they were capable of empathizing and sympathizing in the first place, they wouldn't do what they do at all. You can have the biggest, loudest protest imaginable but they still wouldn't understand the significance.

But it is gloriously fun and satisfying to think about it.
