Riot police struggle to calm violent crowd in Vancouver | Sympatico.ca News

A violent and unruly crowd overturned cars, set fires and looted stores throughout downtown Vancouver late Wednesday, after the Canucks lost the Stanley Cup final 4-0 to the Boston Bruins.

For hours after the game ended, mobs of people rampaged through the city as police struggled to restore order after Vancouver's run to the Stanley Cup ended in resounding defeat.

Several vehicles burned across the downtown core, including a BMW parked outside the Hudson's Bay store at Seymour and Georgia Streets, where looters took advantage of broken windows to grab handfuls of merchandise.

Mess with us you mess with the whole trailer park.....................sickening

No doubt.... Considering that VCR has rioted after 2 Stanley Cup losses and 1 canceled GNR concert, I have to wonder what the reaction would have been had the Canucks actually won.

Might have been dancing in the streets instead. As long as the idiots could be controlled. Idiots seem to rule at these events however. Unfortunate.

Someone started a Facebook thingy of the riots, and the cops can just pick out the miscreants at leisure. They were posing. Not too brilliant by any stroke...........

I kinda wonder if the trend in VCR is similar to that of Montreal where they riot because of a loss, a win or because it rained on Tuesday.

In the end, I also hope that the police can capture those that had the brilliant idea of posing for a photo-op in the midst of their looting.. Real geniuses.

Cons are going to order the Air Canadas and the Posties back to work. We riot because of a freakin hockey game. Got all our ducks in a row for sure..........................

Hell, I heard that tickets to the finals were going for over $3000, yet having to pay a few extra bucks for school fees is met with curses and threats.

That always boggled my brain. 3K for a sporting event?! Regular season Patriot's tickets run up to $190 a seat. No thanks.

The riot in Vancouver looks to be 10x worse then the crap that occurred in Toronto during G20.

I can't believe people were stabbed and beaten during the course of the post game riot, crazy. I have to question the intelligence or lack of with most of these people, smile, you're on camera.

Hey Nugs... you're sticking with the Socialist agenda... FREE FREE FREE!

On a side note... you have to pay to watch the Jays? Is it because you live out of the Jays market area?

Any rioters convicted should be publicly flogged and made to pay the entire bill for damage, clean up and policing. Even if they have to pay for the next 20 years.

................You gotta point there, Newt. Better still.......someone else pays.

dunno if we're out of the zone or not. We get satellite t.v. and all the sports channels must be paid for. I refuse, since I only wanna watch the American League East. So, Fox it is. Usually NL or AL south or West. Hey, I'm starting to like the Cubs.

Have no complaints actually. Good baseball is good baseball. Some of it is better than a sleeping pill though.

BTW: Stalin would have never let them go, even after all the bricks were picked.up...........and put back into place.

Hitler took genocide lessons from that wee fella.

Rogers media owns the Blue Jays and they also own SportsNet which has the broadcast rights for approx 70% of their games, SportsNet is also a pay channel so you have to pay for the right to watch the Jays lose.

Ugh! Are you crazy! Don't start liking the Cubs... you'll torture yourself! And PLEASE don't ever become a Yankee fan because then you'll just be an azzhole.

Being from Boston, we can't get away from Red Sox baseball. However a client of mine is from St. Louis and had to buy that baseball package to see his Cardinals.

I would go to Blue Jay games if we had a stadium that didn't feel like a bomb shelter, it is seriously the crappiest stadium in the game, has the atmosphere of a parking garage.

It seems to me the rioting, car burning, looting and general obnoxiousness has reached new limits. What is going on with the modern crop of young people so bent on destruction? Most of the perpetrators are on numerous cameras for the whole world to see. What is the motivation to stoop to such dismal levels to get attention..............the exact opposite end of the spectrum from the likes of Tim Thomas, the Sedins etc. More important, how do we get it stopped? Is Harper's plan to build bunkers perhaps a good idea to house these frigging heathens? Is this going to screw things up for next year when we do bring home the cup?

Yeah, it's multipurpose but the majority of the events are baseball.

I wouldn't say this is a modern or even recent phenomenon, idiots take advantage of events like this in order to express their criminality, you see it in marches, parades, sporting events etc etc.

You can't really stop acts like this shorts of implementing a curfew and shooting rioters.

It's not the "modern crop".. it's just sports nuts in general.

English riots go back to the 1880s.. It's sports.. it makes people stupid and is an excellent tool to promote blind nationalism as a diversion from reality.

Why else do you think MacKay was plugging the Canucks instead of actually answering questions about bombs being dropped in Libya??

As far as I'm concerned, hockey is a gladiator sport designed to be a pressure release mechanism. Ever wonder why people riot at a sport event but not at a political event like the G8/G20 fiasco. Sport are a diversionary tactic to keep people from paying too much attention to what the government is up to. There must be an awful lot of frustration in Vancouver that goes beyond losing a silly hockey game.Behind every external action is some deeper emotional cause. But we have been trained to only look at the symptoms and not the root motivations.

All this for a Stanley Cup loss? People should wait to do this stuff when it's really important. Like at Woodstock '99.

What a party that was.

A whole generation ago the same exact thing happened in Vancouver. I was there. I watch a girl nearly lose her head and then was hosed down with tear gas by ******* PIGS while in line to go for a drink with my gal. Sports fans are ****ed in the head. Especially the one in Vancouver.
