North America, South America, Central America, Latin America and the Americas. What is a continent, region or a landmass?

When the media uses a term like North America, Mexicans, Cubans and Salvadorans are not included as North Americans. The media has never designated Fidel Castro as a North American. North America as a continent seems to engulf the region of Central America.

The Vancouver Sun newspaper, in the business section, under the heading Overseas, lists Amsterdam, London, Sydney, Milan, and Mexico. All correct except Mexico, a place we can drive to from Canada. Maybe it doesn't matter because how many papers does the Sun sell in Mexico? very few most likely.

The gulf between the nations of North America and Latin America is wide, but there is no ocean, bay or body of water intervening. Mexico feels overseas to Canadians, so it is expressed thus.

RE: Mexico, listed as ove

Do you think that's because the media doesn't really report from these places anymore, dumpthemonarchy? I mean, most major media outlets used to have correspondents in Mexico and in South America. Those correspondents had contacts and could tell the head office which stringers were good when they had to be used.

Now very few press outlets keep correspondents in Central or South America. They all depend on stringers and their connections to the corporate press down there. If a big story breaks they put somebody on a plane, but that person usually doesn't know the area well and has to depend on local fixers both for access and translation.

In Mexico, people from the US are referred to as "norteamericanos". Thus culturally, Mexicans don't see themselves as part of the continent. They see Canadians seperately, but include them in the "norteamericano" designation until they know they're not from the US.

The media in Canada, the Vancouver Sun newspaper for one example, uses the LA Times, AP, and the Washington Post for news from Mexico. Even if Canada, the US, and Mexico, are all part of NAFTA, the most corporate trade deal ever, the corporate media in Canada cares little about Mexico. Fact is, the Sun sells very few papers in Mexico or Latin America.

To the peons in Vancouver who buy the media, Mexico is irrelevant.

Part of the problem with media is that they hire reporters on the cheap. They tend to be young, some from journalism school, enthusiastic and ignorant. One reads or sees stuff in the Vancouver media that says they don't even know the geography of BC, let alone Mexico.

RE: Mexico, listed as ove

There is no reason why the Sun, CanWest, etc. could not have correspondents in Mexico and South America though. If they were trulu interested in reporting the news they would do just that.

The problem extends to Canada though. I read a thing the other day detailing how major press outlets have cut their correspondents in Ottawa. There are very few reporters with a full-time political beat in Ottawa. Most are general purpose reporters expected to cover everything. The result is real lack of solid news and analysis because most reporters don't have the time or energy to build solid contacts.

Ottawa has few intl reporters becase nothing happens there, that the PM would threaten to call an election over the Charter and gay marriage is a snore from a bore.

CBC radio had an item tonight how poorly Cdn biz is selling in China. The usual story, ho hum. Canada sends about 90% of its exports to one country and all is well.
