Why Don't Canadians Embrace Winter?

In many parts of Canada, winter lingers the greater part of the year. Yet, many of us do our best to avoid it- by staying indoors or by travel. I just watched "Life Below Zero" on CBC's Doc Zone. Other winter peoples, in Scandinavia and Russia, have mustered their creativity to celebrate the season outdoors.

Why don't we Canadians embrace winter?

I can hazard a guess that they want to live in a mall like climate within a vacuum (little or no pressure). We took a short hike up the hill this morning. Nice view from up there.

And yet, Canadians excel at winter sports: ice hockey, biathlon, Xcountry skiing, bobsled, you-name-it. This tells me you folks embrace the cold weather.

For most of my 60+ years I as much more of a summer sports fan. But now in my dotage I've become more of a winter sports fan and actually prefer Winter to Summer Olympics. Can't honestly tell you why. Every time I see these sports they are largely dominated by Canadians. Therefore, I would think this disproves your point.

Come to think of it, I hate mid summer as well. the only seasons I like spring mid April to the
middle of May and again fall late September to the last week of October

Yep I'm very tolerant of any temperature as long as it's between 22C and 25C!

Uhh... I know this will probably be interpreted as bad, but...

How do I explain this without offending le PCs...

I wrap in fur, up to and including seal boots, the best for slush, in order to deal with winter. That species of seal is not in danger, and... maybe they eat too many baby cod... I was just thinking... and... if anyone wants to get weird about things how would you like it if I genetically modified cats and dogs to have nice furs?

I see no justification.other than if the crown can see that offense as not being justified by the paint-tossers never eating MacDonalds.

For some weird reason I'm not affected by advertizing, which is not something to gloat about before Madison avenue... you know how sometimes you just have to keep things personal about but...

Here's something I *can* tell *only* you guys, which I *cannot* explain logically to Americans, which is.. although you will probably get it ... but... me... as the pencil neck science geek who had to develop evasion techniques to avoid getting beat up ... is now walking into the most red-neck bars wearing this:

It's impossible to explain the effect. Canadian business is booming in the US. In the northern states they're hating Canadians while advertizing for their money. Can you imagine a sane metal-bending and fabricating Montreal operation setting up in Montana? I know it's weird, but for them , it might have been an honest Montreal business trying to find some honest ground to work on.

Anyway... when old enough, I'm going to do the ones with the legs, and when I'm seriously senior, I'm going to do the ones with the full drop-down cape.

I agree with both you and damngrumpy, but I do have to side with winter over summer, as it is easier to
stay warm with the proper clothing than try to be cool when it is far too hot, both extremes drives
one 'indoors'.

I love the heat. Never complain in the summer...& save all my sniveling for winter.

If winter was a season (like...3 months max), we might embrace it differently,
but it's not. Not here anyway. Prairie summers are fantastic, and Prairie summer
storms are a show like few places on Earth. It balances things out to endure the
winter, as you know another summer will eventually follow it.

Winter.....agh....pass. I too enjoy them each less that the last.

Where we live has a lot to do with it alright for example its 9:40 Pm and its +1 still with a
touch of light rain. Tomorrow it will go to plus 3 at least. Winter didn't even start around
here until early December the grass was still green when the first snow came down.
By the last week of February or the tenth of March winter will be over and the spring will
be in full swing. By mid May its already hot in the day time.
I work outside in summer in the orchard. Sometimes I'm out there in mid summer spraying
at three in the morning because of the daytime heat that would burn fruit and leaves.
I like the late season pruning and the last of the picking because the heat is finally gone.
One thing about it winter does not last that long around here.

Historically is used to be the minor-jews (which we shall use Canadianess to accept and forget about while they set up their restaurents) in montreal to come up with that suff, but these days I bet it could come from well-educated ... what's the name or...

What we need is information be fed into the crown coupled with good defense.

I recommed we set up some ceremonies to make the greatest queen of the 20th century feel happy to die.

Did you know how in 1982 the Queen offered the crown of Canada be offered to Andrew if Canada would build him a castle in Ottawa, just when what's his name Trudea had his last term, and..., who got so pissed off about his part in the Flaklands war that all he could do was spend time banging a chick he met somewhere around the central-american part of the western hemisphere.

....Winter didn't even start around here until early December the grass was
still green when the first snow came down. By the last week of February
or the tenth of March winter will be over and the spring will be in full swing....

Winter here usually starts early in October, but goes away for a few weeks. Then
it comes (give or take a few days) again to stay 'bout Halloween and sticks around
'till late March or early April. Winter here is not a season.

Best things about winter: no biting bugs, hockey on tv (but not so far this year, alas), no noisy overpowered cars roaring around the neighbourhood, hockey on tv, no JWs peddling their mythology door to door, hockey on tv, sharing a bottle of Chateau Sinister 2011 with Mrs. Sinister in front of a cozy fire, hockey on tv, kids home for Christmas, hockey on tv, and hockey on tv.
