He was served with a libel notice. That is a legal action. Despite his multiple comments about standing by his words, he had to comply with this notice and retract all his statements in order to avoid further legal proceedings.
I don't know what to tell you. The legal action that he faced and his response is clearly documented in about a million different news sources.
