Trail closed in Banff while grizzly feeds

A popular hiking trail near the Banff townsite remains closed while park officials wait for a grizzly bear to move out of the area.

The bear was first spotted Sunday afternoon on the Sundance trail near the Cave and Basin National Historic Site feeding on a carcass.

“We'll certainly give the bear the opportunity to finish the carcass,” said Steve Michel, a human wildlife conflict expert with Banff National Park. “We do anticipate that we will keep that trail closed for probably a week or so.”

Michel says there are no concerns about this bear, although he does want to remind visitors that this is the time of year grizzlies come down to feed on berries and bear encounters are not unusual.

“This is the kind of thing that happens all the time in Banff National Park and there’s no concerns about this being unusual behaviour at all.”
