A web hosting company reportedly responsible for the distribution of 75 per cent of all junk e-mail has been shut down.

Servers owned by McColo Corp. in California were no longer operating as of Tuesday evening, according to Hostexploit.com — a security blog edited by Jart Armin and Jim McQuaid.

"This clearly demonstrates that, when presented with the appropriate evidence of criminal activity, the internet community can bring about the positive forces necessary to purge it," they wrote in the blog.

I have a Ubuntu system with the latest in Firefox and SpamAssassin up and running and updated regularly at no cost to me.
I have yet to be spammed or hit with a virus or `cracked`(correct terminology).
So why should I care.
MicroSoft was cracked 13,000 times last year Ubuntu - 13 and more than half of those were caused by `shared users`.
Canonical/Ubuntu has predicted almost twice that number for 2008 for MicroSoft and no more than 20 for TRUE Ubuntu systems worldwide.

Run Ad-Aware, Spybot and CCleaner from time to time. Works for me. No problems in 3 years. I also use AVG and Firefox. Once in a while I'll also run Hijackthis.

1. I chose an ISP who cares about it and has good, configurable spam filters. I haven't had any unwanted email for years, I just get a message from my ISP about every six or eight weeks listing the subject lines of one or two messages its filters couldn't make a decision about. I can flag them as spam and I'll never hear from those email addresses again.
2. I don't use any version of MS Outlook or Internet Exploder. There's Firefox, Thunderbird, Eudora...lots of better options. And they're free.
3. I have THE BEST security software on my Windows systems, the Kaspersky Internet Security Suite.
4. Linux.

I use guerrillamail whenever I can.

I delete messages off of my mail server instead of downloading them.

I have images and scripting turned off.
