Should we provide free public washrooms?

A Winnipeg architect says his latest project is making a big difference in his neighbourhood: he's given people who live on the streets near his inner-city office a place to relieve themselves.
Wins Bridgman recently moved his firm to a renovated building at the corner of Higgins Avenue and Main Street. He noticed a strong smell of urine in the area, where homeless people who live or spend time had no access to a toilet.
Bridgman wanted the city to build public washrooms near his firm, but says the city encountered some logistical problems.
So he and the Downtown Business Improvement Zone set up two portable toilets on the corner. A few weeks later, he said, the difference is noticeable.
It cost $700 to rent the two portable loos for three months, including the cost of biweekly cleaning, Bridgman said, a cost he considers well worth the result.
Police and BIZ patrollers check the restrooms regularly to ensure they aren't being used for illegal activity, he said.
Should we provide free public washrooms?

I agree to free washrooms! So many times I've been taking the TTC and had to go so bad. Unfortunately there are only a few Subway stations that have them.

Yea why not ,it is not possible to control your bladder ,and unless you want to see people urinating in public because of a natural act of the body to let go ,then why not ,i must just add that in Europe they do not have public loos, and you have to pay or enter restaurants or bars to be able to access them, and still you have to pay ,here in England there are many public loos ,i have noticed that they have started charging for there use ,and in my opinion this is wrong .

$700 for three months rental? That's a fantastic deal! We went to rent a couple
for a weekend a couple of years ago, and they wanted $500 for two (a Men's &
a Women's) for the weekend, including delivery and pick up.

Well...for much less than that, we built our own...and they're permanent and
skiddable once it's time to move them...way roomier than those plastic phone
booths that happen to have a toilet in them. The Woman's has a set of
cupboards (doubles as a changing station for the young ones) and the Men's even
has a urinal.

Unless they change the laws so that we all can crap and pee anywhere we please, then public washrooms should be available at decent distances from one another.

Everybody's gotta crap and pee, and if you're homeless, this doesn't change this fact, and if everybody else wants to have a pleasent smell that doesn't remind them of the homeless around them and they can live their lives without dicomforting smells, then give them washrooms.

It seems the height of human greed and stupidity to charge for such a basic human necessity. What's next? Charging for air?

Well sure! Why not? We are already charged outrageous amounts for water. However I wouldn't care if I had to pay a quarter to take a dump.

There are locks inside and out. Inside for when someone is inside, and outside
'cuz out here on the Prairies we have wind that would rip the doors off if given
half a chance. I would also like to see these on the steet corners in Toronto. I'm
sure we could ship them the plans (for a consultants fee). Finding a couple of holes
to plant them over would be a problem fr the City of Toronto, or Winnipeg, or
anyone else who's interested.

The Canadian Flag usually fly's on the Woman's side, but being a family function,
it was being used when I took the picture (long story). Didn't realize how rough the
American flag had gotten 'till you pointed it out. Tough climate. We'll have to replace
it in the spring.

Should we provide free public washrooms?

Who is "we?"

How do you turn this story about corporate solution to a stinky mess into a socialist debate?

Yes, companies that don't want to smell like p!ss should provide toilets to the homeless people surrounding their little empire.

If I have to pay for any of them I will make it my lifes work to destroy as many as I can.

Have a day.
