As African leaders gather in Egypt for the two-day African Union summit, the world waits to see whether President Robert Mugabe's counterparts will recognize his widely discredited election victory as legitimate.
Main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai withdrew from the latest Zimbabwean presidential election, citing deadly violence and intimidation against party members and supporters. The country's electoral commission declared that Mugabe won with 85.5 per cent of the vote against Tsvangirai, whose name still appeared on the ballot.
While most western countries have called for the members of the AU to condemn Mugabe's victory, it's believed the 53-nation bloc is unlikely to criticize the longtime leader.

Foreign Affairs Minister David Emerson recently announced a number of new measures designed to restrict Canada's relationship with Mugabe's government.
These include:
  • Restricting travel, work and study of senior Zimbabwean government, military and police officials and their families.
  • Reconfirming Canada's long-standing policy against exporting military goods to Zimbabwe.
  • Denying any aircraft registered in Zimbabwe permission to land in, fly to, or over Canada.
