The essence of the Olympic motto is that being first is not necessarily a priority, but that giving one’s best and striving for personal excellence is a worthwhile goal.
However, some in the Olympic movement would argue that winning a gold medal has become the number one priority.
With less than six months to go before this summer’s Beijing Olympics, the pressure to win is mounting on Canada’s athletes.
The Canadian Olympic Committee has set a target of 18 medals this summer in China, up from the 12 that Canada earned four years ago in Athens. Canada's 12 medals was the country's worst Olympic performance since winning 10 medals at the 1988 Seoul Games.
While some athletes thrive under that pressure, others crumble or push too hard. Not only do athlete have personal expectations to maintain, there’s also expectations of a nation.
