The U.S. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have rolled out the red carpet outside Hollywood's Kodak Theatre to celebrate its 80th annual Oscar gala.

Contenders for the coveted best picture trophy this year include crime tale No Country for Old Men, legal thriller Michael Clayton, wartime romance Atonement, oil epic There Will Be Blood and quirky teen pregnancy comedy Juno.

Besides Juno, starring Halifax actress Ellen Page, prominent Canadian nominees include:

  • Sarah Polley for penning the adapted screenplay to her film Away From Her;
  • Animated-short competitors I Met the Walrus (Josh Raskin and Jerry Levitan) and Madame Tutli-Putli (Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski);
  • Sound engineers Paul Massey and David Giammarco, who worked on the western 3:10 to Yuma, and Craig Berkey, who worked on No Country for Old Men.
