Potentially dangerous people may have slipped into the country because of weaknesses at Canada's border agency, the federal auditor general said Tuesday.
The government has spent hundreds of millions of dollars on a new system to screen people who cross Canada's borders.
But Sheila Fraser found that despite the new system, border guards are eyeballing people and using their instincts to judge whether they might be a security risk.
In her seven-chapter report released Tuesday, the auditor general also said the federal government is lax when it comes to handing over secret government information to private contractors who do not have proper security clearance, and is ignoring some of its responsibilities under the Western Arctic land claims deal it struck with the Inuit 23 years ago.
