Air Canada is halving the number of Aeroplan miles that it awards to buyers of discounted Tango fares.
Effective Sept. 15, travellers who choose Tango tickets, the cheapest of four fare categories, will earn 25 per cent of the Aeroplan miles that would normally be granted, down from the current 50 per cent.
Passengers purchasing a one-way ticket from Toronto to Winnipeg, for example, will earn 233 Aeroplan miles, down from the 466 currently awarded. The more expensive "Tango Plus" fare for the same trip will continue to come with the full reward miles of 932.
Air Canada spokesman Peter Fitzpatrick said the company is tweaking the program to keep prices low, in response to customer demand.
Tango buyers travel less frequently, so changing the rewards program is one way to control costs, he said.
