Canada's telecommunications regulator has begun the process of creating a national do not call registry for phone owners tired of receiving unsolicited calls.
In a decision Tuesday, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission established rules that will govern the new national do not call list, meant to prevent telemarketers from making uninvited and often irritating phone calls.
While each telemarketer currently has its own "do not call list" that Canadians must register for separately, the new system will allow people to sign up just once, and for free, to avoid unwanted calls. Subscriptions last for three years.
Companies that violate the list rules could face a $15,000 penalty, while individuals could be forced to pay $1,500.
